With reader comments

A CAMPAIGN to clamp down on shops selling legal highs and drugs paraphernalia is gathering pace. Father-of-two Mike Sole has launched an online petition after so-called "head shop" Skunkworks opened in Canterbury.

Mr Sole has contacted more than 300 councillors across the South East who have Skunkworks branches in their six towns and cities.

He says the premises should be licensed in the same way as sex shops. He said: "This would give local people to power to decide if they wanted these shops and, if so, the conditions they would have to operate under.

"At present, councils appear to be powerless to act."

Mr Sole, from Bridge, has written to Canterbury MP Julian Brazier, who has lobbied Home Secretary Theresa May for a change in the law.

Mr Brazier said: "Skunkworks specialises in selling legal highs, seeds for cannabis and books on how to cultivate it.

"It seems bizarre that the law allows people to sell seeds and books on how to grow cannabis, when the actual growing of cannabis is illegal."

Daniel Lloyd, 25, and Hugo Wenn, 17, both drowned in January after taking the now-banned drug methoxetamine.

Mr Brazier said: "Two young men died as a result of legal highs.

"Surely, there must be changes we can make to prevent organisations like Skunkworks from operating?"

Mr Sole's petition is at epetitions.dir ect.gov.uk/petitions/35275.

That's pretty-much what I commented at the end of the article. I like the way these guys are portrayed as "striking out" and "slamming" and "protesting" when all they are doing is complying with the same old useless agenda driven by years of drug-war propaganda and misinformation. Dorks.

These petitions would be more useful if it was possible to vote against them.

I like how they describe getting only 90 signatures out of a required 100000 as "gathering pace".

be honest - who on this board is still thinking "legal highs" shoulde still be selled open, to minors, to everyone???

we all know that "legal highs" today are very dangerous. woulodtn it be a smart thing to regulate their sales????

Yes it would. But all we are getting is prohibition. NZ is the only country that has allowed even the possibility of a legal high being approved for any human consumption after testing etc.

I agree that legal high shops should be more discrete and out of bounds to under-18s. Also products need to be clearly labelled. Unfortunately, it is the law's attempt to "stamp them out" that have resulting in them not being able to mention any safe usage and dose information, or even what the intended use is. Hence all these "bath salt" labels.

Everyone should have access to whatever pharmaceuticals or drugs they so choose. I've been doing drugs since I was 12 years old and so have many of my friends. There's nothing wrong with that and we should be encouraging society to move away from ageism and give minors more freedoms and powers.

Gotta say I disagree with you there Coolio, it may be a touch hypocritical since I have been doing drugs since the same age as you but I actually do regret it. Drugs have a more pronounced negative effect on developing minds, couple this with a youthful tendency towards risk taking behaviour and it isn't good. I am all for people not too short of 18 (lets say 16) to be able to experiment with softer drugs very occasionally and with parental permission and perhaps supervision, much the same way as alcohol is treated in some cultures but I really don't think its sensible to legalise all drugs and allow people of any age to use them.

Are you kidding? That sort of statement honestly leads to me believe that you are a minor yourself who still lives at home with your parents.

The LAST demographic we need to give more freedoms to is the under 18 group.

Ew at that slamming Methoxetamine, I fucking hate that they banned that :( It's pissed me off more than the Mephedrone ban because I can't even find good Mexy on the streets. Stupid cunts!

Criminal law is not the place to deal with the issue though.

I love when they say these things are unsafe because one or two people die. They never say whether they had AIDS or something, or maybe a heart defect. And also how many people die directly or indirectly from alcohol per day? hundreds. And there have been maybe 20 deaths in the world with bath salts in the years that they've been used.

new onion article for you "Holy shit man drowns in water, water quickly raised to Schedule I by the DEA"
