The UK government's official drugs advisory body has rejected calls to ban the herbal stimulant, khat. The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) said there was "insufficient evidence" that khat caused health problems. The stimulant is traditionally used by members of the Somali, Yemeni and Ethiopian communities. It has been outlawed by the US and Canada and in most European countries, most recently by the Netherlands.

The review was commissioned by the Home Office. The ACMD said there was "no evidence" khat, which contain the stimulant cathinone, was directly linked with serious or organised crime. It said khat, which consists of the leaves and shoots of a shrub cultivated in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, was chewed to obtain a "mild stimulant effect much less potent than stimulant drugs, such as amphetamine". Khat is sold in bundles for about £3 to £6 each. Users often chew one or two bundles for up to six hours at a time.

Wow, that was incredibly unexpected! The government might just ban it anyway I suppose, they're not known for following drug advisers advice.

It seems the main "activist" campaigning for khat to be banned is not universally recognised in the Somali community. I found this from a website about Khat. Sorry I can't post the link on BL because they also sell the stuff.

I really don't know how to start this argument without facing the fear of the defamation act however, Mr Awale has reached a point where his actions became out of order and they can be classified as defamation but sadly the society cannot sue him as such .

What I have noticed from his stance is that he gave himself the power to speak on behave of the Somali community while stripping them of the ability to intellectually participate in the debate. Basically he knows best for them because they "the Somali people" are mentality retarded according to his behavior!

Where is this hypocrite coming from? according to some drama he has created, he had to give up the addiction of khat, what a battle of addiction! His story in his mind represents a true life drama that should be played in movies and also should be told to generations to come. Man, you know you can be addicted to khat as much as you can be addicted to anything in life, the addiction is psychological more than physical.

Do not wait for a national heroism award or any kind of meddles to tap you on the shoulder to say well done, if that is the case, nicotine addicts who manage to give up smoking should be by far braised the most. You tell me Mr Awale which one of the two drugs is harder to give up! To that matter, compare khat to alcohol and tell me which one is harder!!

The publicity and the eagerness to be noticed is your prime motives in joining the anti-khat campaign therefore cut it short and do not speak on behave of khat chewing cultures. You cannot seek the Criminalization of the people whom you claim trying to defend! what loonytoon planet are you in Mr Awale?

Your area of concern should be the Somali youths and that's it, here you will find more listening ears, Somalis who chew khat do not want their children to chew it, similarly parents who smoke do not want their children to inherit the bad habit. I agree on that youth should be prevented from having access to the plant until they can make their own decisions in life. You have to make sure and understand that once they are adults they are free, and non of your concern what they do in their lives there after.

I really do not know Mr Awale at the individual level and that is a person to person meeting, eventhough I would love to have a debate with him related to khat. So far, what I have read online doesn't encourage for an intellectual debate because Mr Awale has proven to be an extreme either now or while he was chewing khat.

Please accept my apology if I have misunderstood your intention but certainly I only reacted to what I have noticed, if you are sincere enough then this is the wrong way to go about tackling the issue of khat. Yes the majority of Somalis, Yemenis are offended by your actions.

Using an article by the BBC that discussing a woman jumping from a building while under the influence of catha edulis is not a proof that khat is to blame. How many people committed suicide in groups while consuming alcohol?. The BBC article discussing khat in relation to the death of the Somali woman is nothing but non sense. This is the media makes something to something else. It is clear that nor you or the media knows the differences between class cathinone and its sub engineered methcathinone!. Khat is not cathinone!, cathinone doesn't stay long, it converts to cathine

Mr Awale has went as far as accusing the white British MP Mr Paul Flynn of being racist against the black Somali community while completely missed the point that Mr Flynn is trying to address. Mr Flynn main argument is that banning khat will create more problems for the Somali community and notably putting a label criminal and drug addicts on them. The MP's opinion is very balanced and it wasn't in any form promoting khat, basically the structure of the argument is very professional.

I quote from the closing argument in the article written by Mr Flynn " if prohibition led to the establishment of a new criminal market which would have a vested interest in increasing the use of the drug beyond its traditional users". This is legitimate point because khat won't be consumed in its fresh format, I assume that it will be recreated in tablets of cathinone in a very concentrated dose, the fact is that khat is mild in its natural format and doesn't look sexy in its consumption are enough reasons for not being popular and unlikely to be at any point in the future here in the west.

True Mr Flynn is white but he truly represented the views of the Somali community accurately, honestly, professionally and as a result of direct contact. In other words Mr Flynn is connected to the same community that Mr Awale has been disconnected from.

Sorry, can't put a name to the quote because I can't find one to attribute.

Don't know who wrote that but +1 to them from me!

Respiratory System Effects

95.Many khat users smoke tobacco during chewing sessions, which may
contribute to the increased prevalence of respiratory problems in male
khat users. Tobacco smoking or exposure to second hand smoke is
one of the established determinants of respiratory/cardiovascular
disease thus the data of such research cause difficulties of
interpretation
66
.
96.It has been suggested that some khat cafes in the UK are not
adequately ventilated, resulting in a potential risk of hazards in terms of
both active and passive smoking.
Claimed potential respiratory system
issues of bronchitis, tachypnoea and dyspnoea may be more related to
issues of the khat using environment and smoking rather than khat use
itself.
97.Disentangling the primary causes of health related harms, argued to be
due to khat, is complicated by, for instance, the use of water pipes
67
and the sale of cigarettes at these cafes. A 2005 WHO report states
that smoking using a water pipe poses a serious potential health
hazard and is not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking. Smoke from
a waterpipe contains high levels of toxic chemicals, including high
levels of carbon monoxide, metals and cancer-causing chemicals

Old info or are they exempted from the ban on smoking also ?

64.As the trade in khat is a legitimate business, it is distinct from the trade
in illegal drugs. Khat cafes are subject to health and safety
requirements as they are public areas. Brent local authority‘s report on
khat use confirmed that within its area khat cafes were legitimate
businesses, with owners paying their business rates
.

32
. In addition khat
cafes appear modest enterprises with slim margins of profit from sale
of khat. Many cafes are a combination of a business and a meeting
place for the community. Khat users at these cafes consider them to be
a social resource.

legalise cannabis and it could be the same.

Old info or are they exempted from the ban on smoking also ?

the majority of people with repiritory illnesses related to khat/tobbacco use probably damaged the lungs during the days when smoking was legal
it will take another 5-15years to gather sufficient data to neglect the effect caused by smoking indoors whilst chewing
