Illegal drug use is in decline, NHS figures reveal
Fewer people of all ages are taking drugs such as cannabis, cocaine and heroin, according to survey

A generational shift away from drugs may be under way, addiction experts suggested today, as figures showed that illegal substances were declining in popularity among all age groups.

Fewer people in England and Wales are taking drugs such as cannabis, cocaine or heroin, according to an NHS survey, which confirmed that use was down in every age group from 11- to 59-year-olds. Twenty percent of 16- to 25-year-olds used illegal drugs in 2009-10, down from 22.6% the year before, and well below the 29.7% recorded in 1996. Similarly, the proportion of 11- to 15-year-olds who have ever used a banned substance has fallen from 29% in 2001 to 22% last year.

The survey found 8.6% of those aged 16 to 59, or 2.8 million people, were using illicit substances in 2009-10 – the lowest ever figure since drug-taking trends were first monitored in 1996, down from 10.1% in 2008-09, 11.1% in 1996 and the record 12.3% in 2003-04.

The proportion using class A drugs such as heroin or crack also fell year-on-year (3.7% to 3.1%), as did those taking cannabis (7.9% to 6.6%).

The findings were contained in the NHS Information Centre's annual survey of drugs misuse in England. It combines official sources of information on drug trends with extensive interviews with the public about their own habits to identify patterns of self-reported substance usage.

From what I can tell illegal drug use is decreasing but the number of hospital admissions and fatalities is increasing, mainly due to "accidental poisoning". Since the government's aim is to stop drug use I guess they still think this is some sort of success, even if the cost of their silly objective is increased harm and more loss of human life.

ILLEGAL drug use is probably decreasing
LEGAL drug use is probably way higher id guess, i thought i saw a news article from teh UK about cocaine and ecstasy being less popular because of the legals they sell in headshops
could be wrong though, im not UK so i wouldnt know

I also suspected this and was trying to see if it was somehow in the figures. They have quite a low number for "ecstasy" use and a much higher number for "other amphetamines".

When the government start blanket-banning legal highs as they plan to I suspect the illegal drug use figures will rise dramatically.

yeah surely this partly reflects the HUGE meow/ 4-mmc/ meph craze that was/is all over the country?
I think due to the decline in availability and quality of E and such, people settled for legal highs as there cheap and available. or perhaps the other way round?
I have no evidence to substantiate my claim except observation, but i think a hell of a lot of people started doing legal highs that hadn't taken anything much previously.
A lot of people mistake "legal" for "safe" IMO.

Yep, those figures are from 2009-2010 - right in the middle of the Mephedrone 'craze'.

No doubt the figures for the following year, when they're released, will show another increase…

I suspect the general decline in quality of the illegal drugs is also a factor. See all the whining junkies in the Heroin social thread, and we comfortably have the world's worst coke now.

yeah this. was quite surprising how popular that drug got considering there's little to no information available on toxicology or damage and barely any research has been done on it; so in many ways this is proof of another failing of the drug laws

also: how do you even record illegal drug use in the first place? it's all underground and unregulated...

not surprising considering how addictive and euphoric it was, plus incredibly cheap

this is a key point.
Be wary of any such statistics.
I heard 92% of statistics were made up on the spot!!
only joking but anyway, there's been a massive pressure for the government to show that their futile "war on drugs" at the massive expense to the taxpayer, has actually had any effect whatsoever.
They can easily make up, or make bias claims regarding statistics.
A lot of these cases are guesstimates with regard to the habits of just a hundred people or so.
Its bollocks i reckon!
