Young people are putting themselves at risk by inhaling laughing gas nitrous oxide in the latest “legal high” trend to hit the Ilkley area, police have warned. Police are warning parents to be on the lookout for small silver canisters of the gas, which is used as an anaesthetic in dentistry. Nitrous oxide is also used in the catering industry to produce whipped cream, and it is believed canisters found in the area could have been bought legally from catering industry suppliers.

Inspector Sue Sanderson, of Wharfedale and Craven Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The problem is they’re being purchased and young people are using them them as a legal high. The concentrations of N2O used in the medical profession are carefully controlled and mixed with the right amount of oxygen to make it safe. By comparison, this is a much higher concentration. It could have detrimental effects.”

Long-term effects on health are not fully known, but inhaling the gas carries a risk of asphyxiation, lung damage and mistakenly inhaling other propellants or harmful substances. The quest for legal highs has seen a rise in the use of various substances in recent years. Police in Ilkley were among the first to warn last year about the use of mephedrone, also known as MCAT, which has since been classified as a Class B controlled substance.

My friends in high school were casual about nitrous, with one friend even using it while driving (!).
I only used it 3 or 4 times, but I could see that they did not appear to be suffering any damage from heavy use.

Three years later, my sister's friends were in a car in high school, inhaling nitrous.
The windows were closed, and the amount of available oxygen in the car slowly became insufficient.
Everyone passed out, and they were found dead from asphyxiation the next morning.

So I learned that it is more dangerous than I had imagined.

However, the risk of "mistakenly inhaling other propellants or harmful substances" is due to the illegality of the N2O.
I suspect that, if we fairly weighted the risks, N2O would probably come out somewhat safer than alcohol.

I remember getting n2o at the dentist as a kid, maybe 6 years old. The dentist told me i'd feel like an elephant, then i saw what he was talking about and floated up and drifted off into a euphoric bliss. It was amazing. No wonder I love psychedelics now. Also as a teenager I stole many whippets cans from the grocery store; not near as fun as the dentist though. It's hardly a new legal high though lol

Looks like one of the comments on the article is from someone who is totally overcome by compassion....

....a laughable fourteen perhaps? Now would be a good time to distribute this to the underclass in high quantities, and let them get on with killing themselves. Millions of people will then have a much better quality of life without the scumbags, who destroy the quality of life of others.

I'm pretty sure B12 will prevent most of the problems that this drug could cause, except of course inhalational injuries or situations like slimvictor described (pretty crazy story man, sorry to hear that...)

Ilkley Moor Baat'Haaaaat, Off their face on Hippy Craaaack =D
And jeez, that comment is fuckin moronic. They should kill themselves so the world can live with less ignorant idiots in it :|

Is Ilkley stuck in the 80's or what? my bro was smashing nitrous whilst I was still a tiny little sperm swimmin in my dads nut sack. new legal high pfffttttt

Another problem might be retards trying to inhale industrial grade nitrous oxide. Saw it at a rave once, bunch of guys passing around balloons filled from an industrial canister. Fucking retarded.

Well, Ilkley is the back of beyond, so it's hardly surprising that they're more than a little slow on the uptake, haha.

Nos is always being sold in baloons at Raves, recently i've seen the huge medical tanks of the stuff (most likely stolen from the nhs) being used to fill baloons, NOS is probably the safest drug i've ever experienced, i know friends who have done over 300 canisters in a night and had fits but what do you ezpect from 300 hits?

Plus they like to think of themselves as a very "high class town" so any form of news such as this is greatly frowned upon :|
Bunch of snobby cunts and chavvy little shits are a great mix for a town like Ilkley ay? 8)

It's weird that it's so unknown and small yet Jimi Hendrix once played there! :D

Lol those antidrug idiots always say the longterm effects are unknown when they can't find anything bad about it.
There's enough literature to be found on the adverse effect of long-term nitrous abuse. But of course, calling the 'other side' idiots and caricaturing their behaviour automatically makes the prodrug movement win the argument... :-/

Every story ive read of someone fucking themselves on nitrous has been due to the stupidity of the user or users (filling a car up with nitrous, taking hits of it while driving, etc) and ha nothing to do with the drug itself. If your not being a idiot with the stuff and your sitting down when you take it id say nitrous is about as safe as anything else. Also how the fuck is nitrous new? :p

Exactly the effects are well known, so saying the long term effects are unknown seems like a cliche idiotic scare tactic, no?
