UK general Election. I could use some advice...

oh okay [edit], vote Green =D

I reckon I may just stay in and get baked.!

Spoil you paper. Scrawl "I TAKE DRUGS & NO-ONE REPRESENTS ME" across it! Photogragh it & post it on fb. I'm thinking quite seriously about either wasting my vote like that, or wasting it voting Green because I like the Greens.

There's no need to vote tactically in my area to thwart the tories, the area is very Lib safe as far as I can tell. The Libs are a bit panicy but I still can't see 'em losing the seat. I could vote Labour but Tony B LIAR spoiled it for Labour, for me, for life.

No my innocent, naive little Greeniethumber, they say they are going to legalise cannabis for medicinal reasons & although I expect to see something similar from whomever wins, I wouldn't go expectng anyone to actually follow thorugh with their pre-relection promises until I see one of 'em actually do it!

No-one has said a thing about legalising drugs as a whole anyway, have they?

Greens want 'legalised use' for all drugs, so I guess some kind of Portugal-style decriminalisation, they don't mention much about supply. Better than nothing.

Obviously they're not going to be a majority government on their own, so they're not going to be in a position where they can follow through or back down from their pre-election promises, but that's their policy & nobody will know you support it if you don't vote for them. Messages on spoiled papers aren't looked at by anybody, the only thing they count for is adding to the turnout, I've no idea why anybody would waste their time spoiling their paper.

I have no idea why millions of people, even women, who were sacrificing themselves for the right to vote only a few generations ago, sit at home & fail to vote at all. I'm just trying to get that sort of person to participate & if encourgaing them to spoil their papers gets them into the ballot box & off their arses, fine.

But don't worry, you're preaching to the converted. I'm already voting Green.

Er, exactly which 'millions of people' sacrificed themselves for the right to vote only a few generations ago in this country, apart from that daft upper class bint who got run over by the King's horse? The suffragettes were as much a part of the establishment as our glorious leaders. Most women weren't interested in the slightest...

Not millions and more than a few generations ago, but the chartists and the like maybe fit the bill more - peterloo and all that - certainly not the establishment (and we still haven't got annual elections). But the chartists after a quick update would recognise the current setup for what it is i reckon - i don't feel the need to prop up a corrupt figleaf in their name - quite the opposite.

If you spoil your paper then you're still failing to vote, but adding to that turnout figure to make the election look legitimate. You're also wasting your own time.

Everyone's got an opinion.

Fortunately, how I waste my time & my vote is no-ones business but my own.

So, looking at all that, I may as well just vote honestly tonight, then.

Let's hope someone brings electoral reform back onto the agenda. Using STV in constituencies would put an end to tactical voting, and show some interesting trends -- while still retaining compatibility with the existing FPTP, if we consider a single mark as a 1.

It's time we had RON on the ballots, too (although that can lead to vicious circles; never happened at my uni, but I've heard of successions of successful "re-open nominations" -- "RON's the 1" -- campaigns elsewhere.)

Wot??

RON stands for "Re-Open Nominations". Stands in every student election (except where called "New Election", but that's the same thing), and you lose your deposit if you fail to get more votes than RON. (How do they determine whether you lose it or keep it without RON?)

And I voted with my heart, but they're still recounting even now.

What the fuck happened?

Anybody else feeling - like me - as though the bottom's dropped out of their world with this outright Tory victory?

I'm speechless with grief.

What the fuck happened is that the Labour Party dun fucked up.

There is grief on both sides of the border about the overall result.
