As the Speaker’s wife Sally Bercow tweets her interest in the latest designer recreational drug, Jasmine Gardner reveals the truth about the ketamine substitute.

If ever there were a turn-off for young people experimenting with a new drug (in addition, of course, to the reports of two young men who drowned after taking it), it would have to be Sally Bercow, wife of the Speaker of the House of Commons, jumping on the bandwagon.

After mephedrone — the so-called “legal high” that was sold online before becoming a class B illegal substance in March 2010 — comes methoxetamine. MXE or M-Ket — or “mexxy” as the press has dubbed it — is a new drug that after being sold online disingenuously as a “safe” alternative to ketamine has also been banned.

This is not rhetorical I genuinely am interested - has the terminology 'safe ketamine' really been used that much by suppliers?

I read the 'rational drug design' article etc but that only stated the logical INTENTION of the -ethyl to reduce renal toxicity. Whilst any RC supplier would likely not refer to it as 'safe ketamine' - doesn't that implicate use and therefore illegality/Medicines act applicability?

^ Wish I knew enough to answer your question bro, personally i've never seen it advertised as safe ketamine. But y'never know in all the crazy headshops out there!

If ever there were a turn-off for young people experimenting with a new drug (in addition, of course, to the reports of two young men who drowned after taking it)

It's not like people drown without drugs in their system, or drown after getting drunk, or taking prescription downers....

I've never seen it advertised as "safe ketamine." I don't think any drugs are without risk of some sort of ailment, mental or physical. I just don't think people should be stopped from seeking pleasure that harms nobody else. I just feel like these bans ignore the real issue. People are going to seek out that experience or one like it and always will. MXE will be replaced by some other dissosciative.

Hell, people have accidents every day sober and there is no drug to blame there, why is it such an issue if someone has drugs in their system when they pass? Isn't the bigger issue the fact that they died? They didn't die from the drugs direct effects, they died because they were irresponsible. Not being on drugs doesn't mean you're magically protected from drowning.

Blaming drugs is the easy way out.

i am so fucking angry with the willful fucking ignorance of drug reporting i could fucking burst. "ketamine is horse tranq!" (no mention of use in human medicine) "mxe touted as safe ketamine!" (never ever seen that) "drugs harm you > should be banned" (no fucking shit, let's ban alcohol and tobacco then uh, oh shit)

"think of how dumb the average person is, then realize half the people are even dumber than that" - george carlin

will humanity ever grow out of this fucking shameful celebration of ignorance and mediocrity?

fuck, just clicked the link, image caption "Dangerous: Mexxy is definitely not sexy" WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!
