THESE shocking before and after images reveal in stark and simple terms the cost drug addiction takes on the human face.
The harrowing images are featured in the controversial film 'From Drugs to Mugs' - the follow up to the 2004 'Faces of Meth' project which highlighted the effects of methamphetamine use.

The pictures, which show how addicts have lost teeth and scratched their skin to the bone, were released in the hope that they will make kids think twice about ever touching drugs.

New photographs show the first arrest of a drug user partnered up with a picture taken in some cases only three months later.

US cops at the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office in the state of Oregon put together the collection, which features users of all hard drugs including cocaine, heroin and meth.

One drug user interviewed in prison for Drugs to Mugs, said: "I don't own a house, I don't own an apartment, I don't have a banking account, I have zero money, I don't have nothing to show from my time on earth.

"Drugs and alcohol has led to me having nothing today."

Deputy King added: "We want everyone, not just high school kids to look at these pictures and to be shocked.

Reader comment...

We are to lenient with drug takers and make out it is an illness when we know it is self inflicted and should be at least frowned upon. All the time we are subsidising these people and treating them as if they are something special we will never deal with this culture of toleration for a self inflicted problem.
Our so called celebrities are almost seen as gods to some of our young because their antics in this vien are almost is seems sometimes to be condoned be the powers that be.
Its time for a new mindset on this problem if we are ever to get to grips with it at all.

I like how "drugs to mugs" have approached the situation with fairness.. interviewing both addicts +/ prisoners aswell as successful drug users..

oh wait..

The relevant authorities should give them a positive addiction such as going to the gym!

^^^^ Who ever posted this has obviously never been high, if only it were that easy!

Good scare tactics for the small minority off people who fall for that shit, These pictures are sad too see, Drugs may not work at beautifying our external but mentally (in moderation of course) it offers something completely indescribable.

Having said that I do enjoy the gym!

I was watching those faces long time until I realized that one half is the users that were at the time not using XD I was like "he looks like psycho meth trainwreck, soo ugly I hate meth...wait.. wut?!?!?! lolololol :D" I was thinking they were all examples of destroyed faces :D

I can see comercial for meth comming "are you suffering from hairloss?are you overweight? wanna look like nosferatu?? look no futher!!,theres Meth call now and recieve free Snorter PRO when buying 3 grams or more!!!"

^^^ I think they do work in some respects, I grow up in an area full of heroin addicts and it stayed with me, scared me and defiantly put me off trying certain drugs. I don't want to loose my life. But Im a curios cat. Like the person in the article
"When I tried weed I said, 'This is not doing anything,' and so I would try other drugs and they would have a more positive effect than what they led me to believe," says Koutsostavros. "I feel like scare tactics are the worst things you can use with drugs."

*DOB :)

How many successful meth users do you know? Also they are simply taking pictures to show the effects of meth use.. I guarantee you meth isn't making anyone look better

None.. because i don't know any meth users.. i don't know any non-successful meth users either. How many meth users do you know?

And the pictures they put in the media are obviously the worst cases of meth featurs they can find.. again.. how many meth users do you know?

All the time we are subsidising these people and treating them as if they are something special we will never deal with this culture of toleration for a self inflicted problem.

Should people with eating disorders (Anorexia/Bulemia etc...) not be tolerated either then? What about people that 'Self Harm'? should they be ignored because they 'choose' to put themselves in that situation?

Drug use in most cases 'is' a self inflicted situation but there are many reasons that people turn to drugs to cope with life (this applies to anyone from the homeless guy you see when you are catching a bus to professionals like Doctors or Sportsmen/women). People don't generally start out to become a drug addict. They use drugs a little to help with their situation and when left unchecked it can spiral out of control pretty rapidly into a full on addiction before the user knows what has happened.

Drug addicts (in most/a lot of cases) are a product of society, and when they seek help, they should be treated as such.

Most people are lucky enough to never become what they fear and despise (generally because of government propaganda or fear caused by the fact that they know that they, their children or any other person close to them has the ability to become an addict), but addicts shouldn't be seen as lesser people just because they happened to turn to drugs as a coping method.

If help is genuinely seeked by an addict, the should be treated as someone with an illness and all the help that is available should be given to that person.

I've used Meth a couple of times. I didn't like it so I wouldn't say I was a 'Meth User'. I felt way too tweeked and couldn't sleep for days afterwards. I'd much rather have some MDPV, I always found it to be a lot smoother and not as 'in your face' as Meth.

Each to their own though.

just a short stay in city or county jail is drug education enough for me . crack heads and tweekers, drunks and junkies rule the roost in there .

they will do home invasions and victimize any whom they can manage to get at for their habits .

every city and town has them . they let their infantile need for instant gratification get the best of them . sucks!

Yah but again.. these criminals are obviously not responsible, successful drug users.. A county jail will be full of them.. doesn't mean there aren't just as many if not MORE users on the outside, that are responsible and are successful and therefore don't get arrested / end up in news papers being the next scare tactic face of the month.

Shocking mug shots reveal toll of drug abuse

In-your-face photos aim to scare teens straight by striking their vanity

With disturbing before and after photos of drug users’ faces, a new anti-drug campaign may succeed where others have failed, grabbing teens’ attentions by appealing to their vanity.

The pairs of mug shots, which graphically display the damage drugs can do to the face, were collected by the sheriff’s office in Multnomah County, Ore.
Faces that were normal — even attractive — in initial photos, shot when addicts were first arrested, metamorphose over years, and sometimes just months, into gaunt, pitted, even toothless wrecks.

The photos are part of a 48-minute documentary called “From Drugs to Mugs,” created by Deputy Bret King. King hopes that the documentary, which is available on a DVD along with a CD of mug shots, will help scare kids straight by showing them concrete evidence of damage that can occur within months from using meth, heroin or cocaine.

so so sad :/ these people are addicts...and those are mugshots. Those pictures shouldn't exist, in fact, instead of taking pictures of them, they should've been sent to a rehabilitation facility.
