'Last week Professor Roger Pertwee called for cannabis to be licensed for sale, and now Tim Hollis, the Association of Chief Police Officers' lead officer on drugs, has said the current criminalisation-based approach to policing cannabis use should be reviewed. Pertwee and Hollis are bringing a welcome breath of fresh air to the debate about drugs and the harm they do.'

'In the face of a rising tide of dissatisfaction with the intellectual rationale for the current drugs laws, the coalition should seize the opportunity to establish a genuinely science-based approach to drugs policy.'

'THE Government's former chief drugs adviser who was sacked for claiming ecstasy and LSD were less dangerous than alcohol and smoking will give a high-profile lecture Stoke-on-Trent next month.

Professor David Nutt has been chosen to deliver the 41st annual Wade Lecture at the North Staffordshire Medical Institute in Hartshill on October 7.

The expert is based at Imperial College, London, and was chairman of Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs from 2008 to 2009 when his dismissal by then Labour Home Secretary Alan Johnson caused a political storm.

He had previously clashed with Mr Johnson's predecessor, Jacqui Smith, after he compared the 100 deaths a year from horse-riding with the 30 deaths a year linked to ecstasy.'
