The drug, called Phenazepam, was developed in eastern Europe in the 1970s to treat epilepsy, alcohol withdrawal syndrome, insomnia and anxiety. But because of its depressant effects, Phenazepam – which can be swallowed as a pill, snorted or injected – is also taken by users of party drugs like ecstasy to come down from their high. The drug, one of several known as Benzos or Benzo Fury, is currently only prescribed in the former Soviet Bloc, but it is not controlled in Britain and is freely available on the internet.

In a letter to the British Medical Journal, four leading toxicology experts said it could be used as a substitute for controlled benzodiazepines – taken by heroin users to stave off withdrawal symptoms – or designer drugs such as mephedrone. The researchers, from the University of Dundee's forensic toxicology laboratory, detected traces of Phenazepam in nine post mortem blood samples this year, prompting fears it is being increasingly misused. Seven of the victims, all of whom were aged between 31 and 45 and had a history of drug misuse, had died after taking opiate drugs such as heroin.

Concerns had been raised last year when nine people in Britain were admitted to hospital after taking Phenazepam overdoses, prompting the Scottish government to issue a health warning. Studies in Sweden, Finland and the US have also reported that the drug is being misused. The researchers wrote: "This many cases suggests that the use of phenazepam by drug misusers in the UK is on the rise.

"Phenazepam can be obtained legallyon the internet so it could become more widely uses...doctors should be aware of both the availability and illicit use of phenazepam in the UK."

Great, more complete bullshit from the media.

And benzo fury isn't phenazepam... lol?

6-APB<>Phenazepam lololololololol

Total morons. Thinking benzo fury (6apb if I'm not mistaken) is a benzodiazepine is hilariously retarded. And then they go on to say phenazepam is benzo fury? The news is retarded these days.....

I am getting increasingly frustrated with this misinformation in the media.
People do read and rely on this sort of information for a majority of their substance knowledge.

Its just a dangerous practice that needs to stop as soon as possible.

seems like the UK comes out with a new article on a different RC every week. all they do is worry, worry. they should be lucky they don't have meth over there. that's a bigger problem then Benzo Fury

I thought benzo fury was one of those bullshit 'blends' or are they actually selling pure whatever-APB as benzo fury now?

Many people i know who use drugs in Finland also use Benzos recreationally and specially when coming down on speed or some other shit. Dont know much about benzos but from what i can see its crap and i believe the strongest shit comes from the pharmacy. But wtf can you do if it has a prescription(or you have a prescription pad) its all good.
I totally disacree on this benzo fury bullshit, but it aint good of a mix when all these fellas roaming the street with 24 beers in theyr bellies and cuppela benzos(or any pill from A to B) to stir it up; aint pretty.

seeing the words pure and Benzofury in the same sentence doesn't look right,
the material has never been pure and was/is often stretched with cheaper active cuts.

DRUG users are beating the ban on meow meow by taking a potentially lethal epilepsy pill.

Phenazepam, widely available on the internet, mimics the effects of the former "legal high".

But Britain's leading toxicologists issued an urgent warning yesterday after it was linked to a string of overdose cases. Phenazepam was found in the blood of nine people who died in Scotland, although seven of them had also taken opiates. British teenagers turned to the drug after meow meow, also called M-Cat or mephedrone, was outlawed last year. There have also been reports from the US, Sweden and Finland.

Phenazepam is used to dampen symptoms of epilepsy and anxiety. It is not licensed for medical use in Britain and is only prescribed in Russia and former Soviet bloc countries. But it can be legally obtained here online under the name Bonsai Supersleep - a mixture of phenazepam and other drugs also used as a substitute for tranquillisers like valium.

Dr Peter Maskell, of the University of Dundee, warned in the British Medical Journal: "Phenazepam use in the UK is on the rise. It can be obtained legally on the internet and is being used as a replacement for other drugs. "Doctors should be aware of both the availability and use of phenazepam in the UK."

Wait. thats what i was wondering. Ive always heard of this benzo fury as if it was a smoking blend and ALWAYS wondered why it was called benzo fury. Realistically people like us are really gonna be the only people who know what a benzodiazapine is, so why call a shitty smoking blend benzo fury? Makes no sense. Doesnt even seem like it would help sell the product. And then, i come in this thread and read the posted article and im like wtf? I actually thought i was mistaken and was even gonna check my local head shop for benzo fury (really intended to look for phenazepam as the article talks about) Talk about some stupid fucking bullshit. I hate the goddamn media. Especially UK articles like this. Its like these people constantly run around wringing their hands, sweating, and smoking cigarettes while worrying themselves to death Now thats not to say that the US doenst have its own problem with terrible drug related articles, because we most certainly do. It almost seems like the UK are truly afraid of drugs. Like really deathly afriad. I would contend that there is a larger impact on the health system due to the stress accumulated from worrying so goddamn much about drugs than the actual drug use/abuse itself.

lol I remember this exact problem being predicted a little over a year ago when 5apb was given the slang name "benzo fury." Obviously people are going to relate the stuff to the benzodiazipines. Lets learn from this and take more caution when giving a new chemical a new, offical name

^ but surely you should do some research before writing in a national newspaper, else you look like a poorly informed misguided idiot like this guy does....

Seems I've been banned from commenting on The Sun's website due to the verbal pasting I gave them last time they cooked up a bullshit story like this. I can't help but laugh at that.

Benzo fury was NOT 6-apb.

I'd link you a study, but it lists sources. They analyzed the benzo fury, it had caffeine, bzp, and tfmpp I believe. That's what the three products from that site tested came up as (one of them without the tfmpp) If you know the site that sells that bullshit, don't buy it (and note depending on where you are from it's illegal [such as the US])

Real Benzo Fury is 6-APB, because it has benzofuran in the name, looks pretty similar.
I'm sure there's a lot of sites which sell a cheap copy of this (and other RC's) and try pass it off as the real thing.

Anyway, The Sun makes me want to cry, seriously its probably the worst paper in Britain (apart from Dear Deirdre, that's kinda funny). Wish they would go the way of the News of the World. I'm sure all the cat fiends are now snorting benzos, I'm sure the highs are similar 8-)

I really wish reporters would do their research before writing this shit, they can spell Phenazepam and cant even Google benzo fury lmao.

6-APB is 6-APB, can't we just call it that? Benzo fury is some bullshit legal high crap that might, in some cases contain some 6-APB. I think I just hate the name.
