Young people who use cannabis are doubling their risk of developing psychotic symptoms, experts warn.
And mental health problems persist among those who continue using it compared with those who stop, according to research by an international team of scientists.
Their study adds to mounting evidence that smoking cannabis can trigger psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia in vulnerable youngsters.

It appears to demolish counter-arguments that cannabis does not cause symptoms of mental illness, or that some turn to the drug as a form of self-medication to deal with them.
The research also shows a link with psychosis at a very early stage of use among young people who previously never experienced such symptoms. They include paranoid ideas, hallucinations, hearing voices or bizarre behaviour.

The study, by a team from Germany, the Netherlands and the Institute of Psychiatry in London, focused on more than 1,900 volunteers aged 14 to 24 living in Germany. It followed up with the group after three years and eight years.
Those who had not previously used cannabis but began to during the study had double the risk of developing psychotic symptoms, it found.

If they carried on using it, they were at an increased risk of psychotic experiences compared with those who did not.
There was also no evidence that suffering psychotic symptoms was likely to result in people turning to cannabis for relief.
Reporting on their findings in the British Medical Journal, the team concluded: ‘Cannabis use precedes the onset of psychotic symptoms in individuals with no history of them.’
Cannabis may also increase the risk of lasting harm to mental health by making such symptoms persist with continued use.
Last month, Australian researchers found that cannabis use accelerates the onset of full-blown mental illness almost three years earlier in people at risk.
Sir Robin Murray, professor of psychiatric research at the Institute of Psychiatry, said of the latest study: ‘It is one of ten prospective studies all pointing in this same direction.
In short, it adds a further brick to the wall of evidence showing that use of traditional cannabis is a contributory cause of psychoses like schizophrenia.
‘It adds new information by showing that it is those who show psychotic symptoms within a few years of initiating cannabis use who are especially likely to develop persistent psychotic symptoms if they persist in their use of cannabis.’
Previous research has shown that a quarter of the population has a genetic predisposition which makes them ten times more likely to develop psychosis and other schizophrenia-like symptoms after smoking cannabis.
Experts warn that anyone with pre-existing mental health problems or family history is at increased risk of mental illness if they use cannabis.
In a BMJ commentary, Professor Wayne Hall, from the University of Queensland, and Professor Louisa Degenhardt, from the Burnet Institute in Melbourne, say the link is biologically plausible and more information should be given to young people about the risks.
‘The case is strengthened by evidence that regular cannabis use in adolescence predicts poorer educational outcomes, increased risk of using other illicit drugs, increased risk of depression and poorer social relationships in early adulthood’, they added.

This has been known but ignored for years. The THC[ TetraHydroCannabinol],in Cannabis dampens the Inferior frontal cortex, that keeps people sane. What more evidence do we need? To the pro-Legalize Cannabis lobby, you are as insidiously dangerous as drug traffickers and pushers, if not more so.

that CBD is a protector from phsycosis, and he believes CBD based medication could be used to treat the illness. If prohibition was to end, the goverment could require all vendors of the drug to make sure the THC content is equivelant to or less than the CBD content, thus reducing the risk greatly. Can someone explain in what way ending prohibition & regulating the supply would make cannabis more "dangerous"?

This just in: people with predisposition to psychosis go psychotic. MORE AT 11!

Oh science, I hate the Daily Fail.

Im getting bored reading these same articles over and over again. It feels like the prohibitionists have stayed still with theyre arguments since prohibition started. The shitty part is that many people still buy in to that; I guess if you bombard the brain with bullshit for a cuppela decades something sticks.

Here's the full write-up of the study. I've only skimmed through it but it appears to be completely misrepresented in the tabloids unsurprisingly.

In conclusion, this prospective study confirms previous suggestions that cannabis use is an independent risk factor for the emergence of psychosis in psychosis-free persons and that those with an established vulnerability to psychotic disorder are particularly sensitive to its effects, resulting in a poor outcome.

Cannabis is one of many independent risk factors. Those with an established vulnerability (i.e genetic predisposition) will be more sensitive to its affects, meaning cannabis will effect them negatively.

These findings have public health implications. If a causal relation between cannabis use and psychosis outcome is assumed, the population attributable fraction that is, the maximum proportion of psychosis outcomes attributable to cannabis use in psychosis-free subjects—is higher than 50 percent.

Is then completely undermined by....

Although this high percentage can be misleading because it also includes the effects of all other causal risk factors that interact with cannabis, there is nevertheless cause for concern given the widespread use of cannabis by adolescents and young adults (39–41).

The final conclusion?

The percentage of cases that may be prevented by suppressing exposure to this risk factor may not be negligible.

This great new bit of pro-prohibition research tells us this: People with a predisposition to mental illness should limit their drug use.

I find the reader comments more interesting than the article. This is where the real action is IMHO.

So it doubles the risk? OH GOD I'M DOOMED.
Ohwait, isn't the risk quite small the begin with? I can't find the % of the risk (probably because it's too small to accurately quote IMO), but lets say it's 0.1%, doubles the risk? (Brace for a number of epic proportions); 0.2%...Wait; that's still small.
Fucking stats. If they are confident they are right about ganja then why won't they tell us real stats, not just hyperbole bullshit.

Edit:
I just found this: The onset of symptoms typically occurs in young adulthood, with a global lifetime prevalence of about 0.3–0.7%.
So; 0.6-1.4%? Woah. Guess I'll be winning the lottery soon as well.

Drug crazed ABANDON!

I own this DVD and T-Shirt, maybe now I gotta make a T-Shirt outta the UK Daily Mail....

Or, teenagers who will develop psychosis are twice as likely to smoke marijuana.

Marijuana is the least of many peoples worries. If marijuana causes the most worry in someone's life, then they have some serious issues that extend beyond Marijuana. I have way too many problems. Weed helps me.

Why is it only looking at cannabis use? and not quantity of cannabis use??? I'm sure it's already proven that enough of anything be it weed, speed or even good old alcohol can seriously fuck anybody up.

Until they start defining between 'users' and how heavy or not they are in a quantative manner, I won't start defining between these 'experts' and 'wankers who I don't have a moment's time for'.
