The government has based its refusal to set up a royal commission on the shaky premise that drug use is falling.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" summed up the response from the Home Office, and later David Cameron, to the publication of the home affairs select committee's year-long inquiry into drug policy last week. Why waste time on setting up a royal commission into drug policy (something his coalition partners, in contrast, went on to call for) when our current drug policy is working? The key evidence for this, quoted like a mantra by the government, is falling drug use. But the "falling drug use" plank on which the government is walking is a very shaky one.

For sure, drug use has been falling since its peak in 2002, although that was after a significant rise spread across the previous two decades. According to the British Crime Survey, in 1996 just over 11% of adults had used an illegal drug in the past year. By 2002 it had peaked at just under 12%. In 2012 the figure sits at just under 9%.

However, Britain is not a nation that has simply fallen out of love with illegal drugs. Drug use remains both higher than in 1990 and than in the rest of Europe and by no means are we witnessing a decline in use across the board.

Always kind of wondered where they get the results from? Like of my 20 or so drug using friend and there larger circle of about 40 I dont think any have ever been asked, dont understand it.

No country has fallen out of love with illegal drugs. There is a drug culture everywhere, no matter how little or small. I wish the communities us users develop could be quaint but as for now, we must worry about being tossed in a cage like an animal.

David camerons a proper bellend. Point blank refusing based on shaky at best statistics. It's okay for him to smoke it back in the day but he'll be damned if us lazy working class folk want to have a toke or two. knobhead.

They pull this trick all the time. Like everything, drug use is constantly fluctuating at least slightly, so they blow the changes out of proportion. When drug use is down they claim that their policies are working and therefor no change is needed, and when drug use is up they claim it's because drug policies aren't tough enough and they need to crack down even harder. It's fucking stupid, but people fall for it.

theres a fallacy for that (this ones common with conservative fuckwads)

No country has fallen out of love with illegal drugs.
This.
My friend lived in Saudi Arabia, where alcohol was illegal.
He said people would drink cologne to try to get a buzz.

People simply use drugs.
Period.

If the government makes drugs illegal, people will continue to use drugs.
We need to recognize this before moving on to the next step.
