UK - Alcohol without the hangover? It's closer than you think

If alcohol was discovered today it could never be sold
This is funny to consider.
Q: "What's this new drug alcohol you've discovered? Does it involve an unsuspected alteration of moiety or is it the product of some evolutionarily rare biosynthesis? What?!
A: ".... Well, you know corn, or barley, or grapes, lotsa stuff really ... well we bury it for awhile and let it rot, and then we dig it up, drink it, and it makes us clumsily fight and fuck. You gotta try it! "
I read this article, and in addition to being quite vague, it suggests that this researcher is simply developing new pleasant sedatives that are subject to some sort of rapidly acting and otherwise benign antagonist.
Yeah, I'm curious about the offerings, too. I think it's more just a rhetorical flourish alluding to the possibilities of designer drugs if proper society would just admit that they drink foremost to get high.

alcohol is such a primitive, neolithic-era pharmacological technology. why not just find better drugs instead of trying to shine a turd?

I've tried pretty much every drug I could ever lay my hands on and alcohol is now my preferred DOC - each to his own, brother. I can't touch stimulants because they cooked my brain, opiates are waaaay too addictive, psychedelics are just too raw, weed makes me apathetic and hyper-self concious, MDMA is OK once in a blue moon but otherwise ditto to the stimulants. Alcohol relaxes me, it gives me a measure of confidence, its socially acceptable, its only mildly addictive, it comes in beer form - its only downside is the fact the shit is so toxic that it has to be fucking my body over. Fix that and you've got the perfect drug in my humble opinion.

GHB will never overcome its stigma (whether deserved or not) as a date rape drug.

And the fact that the threshold between having fun and being unconscious is so fine. And the fact that it tastes wretched. And the fact that it's a single dose high, not something that you can sip on all night etc etc etc

A lot of kids have died from 1,4,B around here - not that they haven't with alcohol but the dose response seems to be pretty different to alcohol

No he's actually running trials on a GABA mixed agonist (I think). The details are in the old article (post 3).

alch gives me migraines and ive seen so much worse shit from ppl drinking violencewise than with anything else. This coming from a ten year smackheed lol.

Yeah I'm not a violent person ever but when drinking, I've gotten into fights, been to jail twice for fighting while drunk. Always thought I'd go down for drugs but no.

Alcohol really is a horrible drug. It is certainly the dirtiest drug in existence as it affects EVERY system in the human body. No other drug does that as far as I'm aware. Alcohol penetrates to every major organ in the body within minutes of consumption, destroying cells along the way.

David Nutt's new drug mimics alcohol … minus the health risks and hangovers

Although David Nutt — the British psychiatrist and neuropsychopharmacologist specializing in the research of drugs — has seen his fair share of controversy, he appears to be a genius. With his team at Imperial College London, he is pioneering what is being hailed as a serious revolution in health: a drug that offers the positive effects of being drunk, but without the health risk, or the hangover.

Remarkably, according to the World Health Organization, alcohol consumption is the world’s third-largest risk factor for disease and disability; in middle-income countries, it is the greatest risk. It is a causal factor in 60 types of diseases and injuries and a component cause in 200 others. Almost 4 percent of all deaths worldwide are attributed to alcohol, greater than deaths caused by HIV/AIDS, violence or tuberculosis.

But the new alcohol-mimicking drug alleviates much of that risk as it targets neurotransmitters in the brain directly, giving the user all the pleasures of drinking, without the toxins and risk of poor behavior and addiction.

“In theory we can make an alcohol surrogate that makes people feel relaxed and sociable and remove the unwanted effects, such as aggression and addictiveness,” Nutt wrote in The Guardian.

And since it acts directly, it can also be immediately reversed by taking an antidote. Users could potentially be sober in a matter of minutes.

“After exploring one possible compound, I was quite relaxed and sleepily inebriated for an hour or so, then within minutes of taking the antidote I was up giving a lecture with no impairment whatsoever,” Nutt wrote.

But Nutt says that his team in running into some opposition from the alcohol industry. Nutt was hoping to have their support, but the industry is instead shunning his work until it becomes a threat, he says. Speaking to the BBC, Nutt appealed for investors to come forward and support his groundbreaking research.

“I think this would be a serious revolution in health ... just like the e-cigarette is going to revolutionize the smoking of tobacco,” he said. “I find it weird that we haven't been speaking about this before, as it's such a target for health improvement.”

Any idea on what this may be???

Any idea on what this may be???

It has something to do with bretazenil:

Some of it seems pretty sound to me.. the idea that it wouldnt be addicting seems really sound thought it could most certainly cause physical dependence. As benzos dont seem to manipulate the dopamine reward system heavily or at all and the fact that since I detoxed off a long long long bezno dependence I have received no addictive push at all in that direction I dont think they are addictive. The idea that it does not cause aggression seems a little over stated As I have seen people get pretty aggressive on benzos. Not as aggressive as on alcohol and the fact that the frontal lobe is still working pretty damn good with benzos is key to allowing us to continue to have good logic and descion making.

that would make for crazy nights out.. going from pretty laid back to sober for the drive to another place and then back to lit.. it would certainly be pretty cool.

They are talking about the recent partial agonist benzodiazepine drugs...

That is beautiful progress.

THey could make solutions and have them dissolve in punch.

Has a nutty professor really invented booze that gets you drunk - without a hangover?

  • The professor says it should soon be possible to get drunk safely — by consuming ‘healthy alcohol’
Hangover-free alcohol? Drunkenness that you can switch off with an antidote pill? The controversial former government drugs adviser, Professor David Nutt, has boasted that he is on the threshold of inventing what sounds like the answer to many a sandpaper-tongued Sunday-morning lament. The professor, an expert in how drugs affect the brain, says it should soon be possible to get drunk safely — by consuming ‘healthy alcohol’. He has been experimenting with laboratory-created substances that will supposedly allow people essentially to switch intoxication on and then off again. First, you drink a glass of his synthetic creation, designed to produce the same happy, fuzzy feeling engendered by a moderate amount of alcohol. Then, once you tire of being drunk, you simply swallow an antidote pill to sober you up instantly.

He was sacked from his post as the Government’s chief drugs adviser in 2009 for declaring that cannabis, Ecstasy and LSD are less harmful than alcohol and cigarettes. Indeed, he claimed taking Ecstasy is no more dangerous than riding a horse.Despite widespread criticism that downgrading Ecstasy would send out the wrong message and could convince youngsters it was all right to take the drug, he put his thesis to the test in a stunt on Channel 4 with an ‘experiment’ on several participants.

With Professor Nutt’s ‘healthy alcohol’, there is a possibility that people may simply never take the antidote, but keep taking further doses instead. The fact is that any substance or activity that fires up the brain’s pleasure centres can become addictive. There are other psychological dangers, too. Constant use of pleasure-inducing drugs is also associated with the development of mental illness.

We need to consider carefully whether we really want ‘healthy alcohol’ to be made widely available, or whether it would create a hangover that might last for generations.

flumazenil is significantly more dangerous than alcohol

But there are some much newer selective inverse GABA-A agonists out there that aren't, for example ZK-93426 and LS-193268. LS-193268 was originally developed to treat the symptoms of Down's syndrome IIRC, and would actually be a huge hit on the RC nootropic market if it were 10x cheaper.
