Excerpt from Iowa Independent interview.

Iowa Independent: The Progressive magazine reports that you think marijuana should be legal and available next to beer in liquor stores. Is that true? What about cocaine and methamphetamine?

Sen. Gravel: It sure is true. When are we are going to learn. We went through the Depression and we realized how we created all the gangsters and the violence. When FDR came in he wiped out Prohibition. We need to wipe out this whole war on drugs. We spend $50 billion to $70 billion a year. We create criminals that aren’t criminals. We destabilize foreign countries. With respect, to marijuana, Doug, I’ll tell you what: Go get yourself a fifth of scotch or a fifth of gin and chug-a-lug it down and you’ll find you lose your senses a lot faster than you would smoking some marijuana.

Independent Iowa: Yeah, I’m 37, I think most people in my generation agree with that point on marijuana. What about cocaine and meth?

Sen. Gravel: We need to legalize the regulation of drugs. The drug problem is a public health problem. It’s not a criminal problem. We make it a criminal problem because we treat people like criminals. You take a drug addict, you throw him in jail, you leave him there, and he learns the criminal trade so that when he gets out you have recidivism.

Gravel: Bush should be jailed, all drugs legalized

ha i saw an interview with him on cnn last night. i was going to comment on this in the ron paul thread.

Im sure we would all love to see him or Ron win, but there are not enough pro-legalization voters and probably not even aware these candidates are running. So please people, dont split the democratic vote...again.

he seems like a cool guy

because of his half-year long one-man filibuster we don't have the draft

Ron Paul and Mike Gravel are the only candidates who have anything impressive to say at their respective debates. I've been a Kucinich fan for a long time but even he sounds lame compared to them - they're the only ones blunt enough to admit just how fucked up our country is right now.

Personally I think they should say, "@$^& this!" drop out of their Dem. and Rep. parties, condemn them both to the garbage disposal of time, and run together as Constitutionalists.
I'd put Ron on top... the less crazy (acting. His ideas are a little more... (sane technically) crazy compared to the general running populace) one, with Gravel right underneath him.

And I'd vote for the pair.
But then we couldn't have a presidential election...
Because there would only be two people...
Ron and Mike.
The Dem. and Rep. parties would be dismantled, along with the shadow government backing them both.

But then...
That's dreaming.
Because I won't be able to vote in 2008. :(

I think, the media has already started to make him out to be a crazy person.
:\

Unelectable maybe! Crazy definitely not!

The minute he takes notice of the media (and what they expect) he has already defeated himself.8o

I mean you would be crazy to believe in something, know it was right and just and fiscally sound, to then backtrack because some reactionary creature said BOO to you !:X

Or is that what they call pragmatism , if so stick it up your arse!:X

Ron Paul isn't backing down :D

And Rudy's running scared.

Explain how we would split the Democratic vote. What, between Hillary or Obama?

No...
Between HorO and an independent party, reducing the number of votes for the democratic party...

As in 2000... when Bush won with (if I recall correctly...) 43% of the votes?

Because both other candidates had less - because of the high % of independent votes.

Ron Pauls running for republican nomination. I doubt he will ever run for a libertarian seat again. Even if it did happen, I don't think it would pull too much from the dems, as libertarians traditionally vote republican (if they do at all). However, theres all sorts of new internet born libertarians, so who knows.

I doubt this election will be like that after everyone blamed green party for wrecking the election of gore.

edit: Sorry, I totally ignored Gravel. Probably on purpose, he hasnt a chance in hell.

Some sort of massive scandal aside, there's no way in hell Gravel will win the Democratic nomination over Hillary. The only chance he even remotely has to end up in the White House is to disavow the Democratic Party and run as an independent. In which case, he'll be damn lucky to get even 5% of the electoral votes. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Now there's a good idea. Gravel can play Ralph Nader and steal votes from the Democratic presidential candidate, letting the Republican presidential candidate (Ron Paul) win the election!

Hillary take them both down in flames if they joined forces. Shes such a bitch. I can't stand her (or trust her).

^ I think it would work the other way around, you'd be surprised how many people dislike her as much as you do. Nominating Hillary would be suicidal for the dems. The only people likely to beat a Gravel/Paul ticket would be Gore/Obama or Gore/Richardson I think.

I think it's a little too early for any kind of radical "legalize/decriminalize drugs" to really hold as a topic for this election...

This goddamn war in Iraq will overshadow any other issues.

Plus, we're still too young... we need about another 20 years for the last of the old timers to die off with their ignorant thoughts, and our generations to be older.
