'My daughter died from overdose after Googling safest drug to take': Mother of 15-year-old who took 91% pure MDMA releases heartbreaking video calling for drugs to be legalised

July 14th, 2015

A 15-year-old girl whose mother is campaigning for drugs to be legalised searched online for the 'safest drug to take' before consuming a fatal half-gram of MDMA, it has emerged.

Martha Fernback, from the Summertown area of Oxford, suffered a cardiac arrest in July 2013 after unknowingly taking a 91 per cent pure dose of the drug - almost double the average street purity.

According to her internet history, the GCSE student carefully researched the risks on Google before purchasing a relatively expensive version of the white powder. But, just two hours after taking the £40 drug, Martha died from a cardiac arrest.

Her bereft mother Anne-Marie Cockburn, who believes her daughter could still be alive if regulations were in place, has now joined a campaign calling for drugs to be legalised.

She has released a heartbreaking video calling for a change in the law so that users can make an 'informed decision' about taking the substance.

Yes, you read that right. This is indeed a story from the Daily Mail. 8o

Bless that mother for her clear and steady vision and for her courage. What a terrible, terrible tragedy.:(

I looked up the organization Anyone's Child. Here is a link to their fundraiser and more information. It seems to be only in the UK.

Being naive about dosages myself and having been on Bluelight for almost 4 years now, I would say that information is confusing, subjective and hard to come by and I have 3 decades on her. We are a Harm Reduction site and yet you can go into any thread and find conflicting information, wrong information and unintentionally fatal information (usually from some boasting kid, equally young as Martha.) For a 15 year old kid trying to wade through all the subjective factors by herself, the task had to be daunting. If anything, I think that her death shows just how much we need legality/regulation/free testing/dosage information etc. It's pretty harsh to blame a 15 year old girl for her own death when the adult society put in place a system where she could not turn to her parents or any other adult to help navigate a very risky world. I am constantly humbled by all the volunteer work that goes into making Bluelight as safe a resource as possible--but let's be real: this is one of the most trusted resources out there and it is really the sum total of a diverse bunch of people offering their subjective experiences and varying levels of actual knowledge.

I personally haven't seen anyone saying taking 500mgs of MDMA to be safe in one go. The MDMA section the standard dose talked about is in the range of 100 / 200mgs - not many people talk about having to take double that amount from the get go.

Yes some people discus taking a gram + of MDMA per session but not in 500mg doses.

I've seen people eat a half gram of cut up "Molly" before. These where experienced users and I found there dose to be highly unreasonable. But they lived as I imagine most would. Unfortunatly this girl didn't live. Tragic and also not a fun way to die if the way I felt after having a tad too much was any indication. Extremely dissy and sick to my stomach.

Lots of people take doses like that, unfortunately. I was certainly guilty of that in the past. Very few of them die, though. This girl did take a risky dose, sure, but she was also terribly unlucky.

Regardless, she clearly didn't know what she was doing. No one who shadily orders a white powder (without testing) does. And I don't think many people would consider MDMA to be the safest drug to take. Out of all the anti-drug propaganda, that about MDMA is most true. I don't even know if I've recovered after several years of taking it two-three times, and I bet it was key in my development of depression.

its an insanely high dose without tolerance. even with tolerance that could make you delirious and paranoid/overheat

Tragic waste, although I'm glad the mother has had the common sense to channel her grief against the prohibition which contributed to her daughters death instead of into supporting it as other parents of OD deaths have.

While I agree that MDMA is almost certainly neurotoxic and a contributing factor in the development of depression and anxiety, that opinion isn't, as far as I can observe, shared by the majority of people in the online HR/MDMA use community.

And even I have a hard time believing 2 - 3 doses of MDMA have caused negative side effects which have lingered several years, unless you took some combination of a contaminated batch/substituted analogue/an absurd dose/high doses over a short period of time.

mdma causes receptor downregulation with its serotonin floods. they are also why it overheats and kills you in high doses.

i have known people to vomit and gurn/eyes roll back of half a pill cos they have different serotonin system to others. people are all different. some are very sensitive

downing 2 L of vodka would also kill you

Very sad but I'm glad her mom kept a cool head. Statistically trains are the safest mode of travel but if you you're a young teenager going on a trip and you choose a train as safest and something bad happens that could sour your parents, relatives, friends, etc on trains forever. Statistically something bad is going to happen with anything, everywhere. Life is dangerous by itself. There could be someone that just takes a sip of filtered pure water and drops dead because of something in there. Extremely unlikely but possible no matter how minute.

That's the thing, though: so much "ecstasy" barely contains MDMA, if any at all.

I don't doubt that people who use/heavily used MDMA are in doubt about its purported toxicity.

My heart goes out to this bereaved mother - no parents should have to bury their children. And trying to explain the unimaginable pain and anguish that a parent in such a situation is experiencing to anyone who doesn't have any children is virtually impossible, just as giving birth and raising a child and/or how it feels to use 'street drugs' is.

I also can't put into words how much respect and admiration I have for her because of her decision to speak out against the WoD. And I hope it pays off in the end, lest more mothers end up in the same unbearably tragic predicament.
