Type of General Anesthesia?

Hi guys,

Im going in for Hemorroidectomy (removal of hemorrhoids) and I was just wondering what type of anesthesia I would be getting?

Would it be Midazolam with an opiod or something?
They told me the whole procedure will last like 30 minutes with "burning" down the hemorrhoids with a burning or laser like tool. So it must be a light type of anesthesia...

I did some research on "twilight-sleep" (morphine with scopolamine) but thats more useful in pregnancy during labor.
I dont if they use it for light procedures such as mine though...

And one thought comes to mine is Nitrous Oxide, but the doctor told me that I was going to be given an IV....Not gas.

Or maybe Demerol..who knows...Anyone experienced this procedure before?

wow that sounds very painful i feel sorry for u bro.i doubt they would give u nos for somthing that painful he'l probz just give u a small dose of morphiene im not too sure tho just a geuse

Well then it won't be Midazolam and an opioid. That knocks you out for a good amount of time. I was given it when I got my tonsils taken out.

Your procedure may not require an opioid. You may just be injected with lidocaine or procaine...something like that to numb you so you don't feel whats going on.

If you were to be given any type of opioid or benzodiazepine you would have been told "ahead of time" to have someone to drive you. Its not legal for them to let you drive under the influence.

take it from me, as my uncle is an anesthesiologist.

they would probably give you a strong, fast acting GABAergic sedative with a very short half life, like midazolam, a "ultra-fast" acting barbiturate(there are a few used in practice), propofol, or a neuroactive steriod(GABA acting as well).

ketamine could possibly be used, but use of it on humans is usually used in certain emergency situations rather than general surgical anesthesia.

an opioid will very likely be given to you as well. usually demerol, morphine, or(more uncommonly) hydromorphine or fentanyl. post surgery(when you are released) you'll likely be given a script for oxycodone(probably percocet) or hydrocodone(vicodin).


it really depends on the situation(how its going, what they predict) and the anesthetic of choice from the anesthesiologist.

I don't think that you will be given anything but procaine, lidocaine or something like that to numb you. UNLESS you were told to have someone drive you home because they aren't allowed to let you just drive home under the influence of an opioid, barbiturate or benzodiazepine after a 30 minute surgery. They would get so incredibly fucked if you got into an accident because of them.

Most likely they'll give you conscious sedation, which usually entails an induction agent, a benzo and a strong analgesic agent (often regional). It's pretty common for an agent which induces amnesia to be given as well.

What are your prep instructions with regard to eating and drinking prior to the procedure?

Well, the only way to know is on the day of the procedure. I will ask my anesthesolgist.

Anyway, this has to be done...I almost suffered a severe blood loss due to these suckers in my ass....
