LEUVEN – Two chemistry students at the Catholic University of Leuven have been permanently expelled because they had made exotic and experimental drugs in a university lab. The two students tried out their creations themselves and also gave some away to a few friends. ‘But selling any has never been our intention.’

From our editors

‘We have been incredibly stupid. We should have realized we were doing something that wasn’t ok. But at that time, we just didn’t ask ourselves such questions. We were simply curious’, says W.D., one of the two students. He doesn’t want to mitigate anyting. But he does want to stress that it was never their intention to bring these drugs to the market. ‘Selling them would have been immoral. But I thought it an acceptable risk to take these drugs myself.’

When the university board was informed of the experiments by the two chemistry students by the judicial authority, the students could not count on any understanding there. A sanctional procedure was started immediately, resulting in the most severe punishment: permanent expulsion. In September, both students had to leave the KU Leuven. They are never welcome again.

‘The two students involved have been heard by us and they have admitted they had been making hallucinogenic and stimulating substances’, says vice-rector Tine Baelmans. ‘It concerns exotic, toxicological materials, which are not without danger. To gauge their effects, they have experimented with them themselves. And they have also given them to a few friends. We take this extremely serious. The students involved have abused the scientific infrastructure of the university. And they have also abused their scientific knowledge. We have to be able to count on the deontology of our researchers. This trust has been severely disappointed here.’

Betrayed to the authorities

It’s not clear how long the two students have used the university labs for their experiments. It is certain however that the university itself was unaware. The quantities used by the students were so small that nobody noticed any materials missing. ‘Social control also failed,’ says Baelmans. ‘Partly because the two worked in the labs during the night. Naturally, there is less control then.’

The drug experiments came to light thanks to an acquaintance of one of the students, who had already reported everything to the judicial authorities in the spring of 2010. Shortly thereafter, search warrants were issued for W.D. and also for an older doctoral student D.H. D.H. had been working on his doctoral thesis for 5 years already, and has to leave the university without his degree.

Judicial authorities in Leuven were unreachable for comments yesterday evening, but according to our information both students confessed immediately. Afterward, it took over a year before the university was informed. The university sanction followed in September. The court has not yet concluded its investigations.

‘I deny that I would have confessed to making these substances myself. Neither have I admitted that towards the university’, says W.D. ‘I am not prosecuted for anything of that sort. I do admit I was there during the nightly weighing sessions in the lab where we divided the final products into doses for use, and that I have ingested these substances. But I am also reproached for giving advice and stimulating production. But it really isn’t true that I have encouraged others.’

So now we have two professionals ready to enter the crime syndicate to make a decent living. ie more ecstasy will be produced. The sentence is too harsh, they should have been temporary banned.

Does anyone know what sort of substances they made in the lab? I suppose they weren't illegal as I know of a case of something similar where some college students turned themselves in for extracting DMT in their dorm after being arrested for pot. In that instance, if I remember correctly, they had extra charges for the DMT "lab."

^Yeah if anything they got off easy. Surprised they didn't get arrested the poor chaps.

Haha that was at the school I attend. For these guys, the stuff they were making may or may not have been illegal. Belgium's police may not be as aggressive as ours in ruthlessly hunting down possible drug manufacturers. Also, if they were making it in a university lab, but not caught in the act, there is no evidence that could actually be used to prove that they were making it. Just an organic chemistry lab full of chemicals that belong in an organic chemistry lab.

I do wish the article said what they were making though. I hate when they say people were "making" drugs and it was really just people doing acid-base extractions. It did say that one was a doctoral student who had been working for 5 years, so I am going to guess that they were doing work that was a lot more interesting than acid-base extractions.

judicial investigation is still underway, so it is still possible that they get more trouble. although its true that police here tend to be a bit more humane, you can still catch a harsh judge on a bad day.

have been looking for more information on which substances exactly, but this article was the most in depth of them all. its a very recent article though, was only a few hours old when i posted it here. maybe more on that later, though i doubt it, media here aren't usually very interested in this sort of thing.
i must say i have never read the line 'exotic experimental drugs' in belgian media before (well except in an article that was actually about such substances in the belgian version of scientific american recently, obligatory picture of Shulgin included), so i assume they were indeed making some of the more interesting stuff.

Like loulou says, give it a few years and I bet these 2 will be pumping the world full of lovely mdmaaaa.

or maybe they'll just go to another university...dunno if that'd work out in belgium or not.

I am familiar with the university where that happened, I was considering transferring there next year but I'm not really sure.

It would be nice to hear that no legal action was taken as if that had happened in the U.S, I am sure that if any legal action could be taken, it would have been and they would be facing serious charges.

^ The article says that an «acquaintance of one of the students» reported them. I guess that person takes deontology pretty seriously...

^yeah apparently it was a fellow masterstudent who found out and thought it his/her moral duty to report it. also found some confirmation it was indeed designerdrugs they were producing, no more detail then that though. KU Leuven is also restricting nightly access to the labs from now on.

Oh c'mon, restricting nightly access to labs because of this? That really sucks for the rest of the student community.

you'd need a special permit from a professor from now on. you'll probably have to detail what you are doing there exactly and be able to show the results. in other words, tight control. sucks for the night ravens yes.

ha, these two are already hired, and going to make WAY more than they would have otherwise.

what were these two making?
no way they got everything they needed (precursor wise) from the uni lab if they're making MDMA..a uni lab isn't gonna have camphor oil/sassafrass oil/safrole containing-oil and shit on hand i wouldnt think...
or at least if that uni lab had all the precursor chems for MDMA in stock id think they woulda been burglarized a long time ago...
belgians if you're reading this keep on synthin/open up a new lab.

i dont really see why they got in troble if the drugs they were making arent illegal.
its ashame they cant continue but what were they expecting.

^from what i know, they were making some of the exotic designerdrugs. some of which were err.. grey area, some illegal. they probably mean something like 2c-b or t7 for the illegal ones

They didn't get in trouble with law (so far, anyway), they got in trouble with the University. They were doing unsanctioned work using the university's labs and chemicals. Universities tend to not like that, just like if you worked at a restaurant or factory or something and were in there using their machines and materials to make stuff that has nothing to do with the restaurant's/factory's purpose, and for your own benefit/profit.
