NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Two men were arrested after police said they stole more than 14,000 prescription pain pills from a pharmacy on Sunday night.
Police said 27-year-old John W. Stewart had a gun when he walked into the Rite Aid on Robinson Road around 5:30 p.m. An affidavit said he demanded pain pills from the pharmacy clerk. He then jumped over the counter while the pharmacist got the pills, and put them in a trash bag. Police said approximately 14,000 pills were stolen along with $500 cash from the cash register.
Stewart ran out of the store, and got into a waiting getaway car, driven by 26-year-old Matthew Chrisman.
A witness gave police a description of the car they were in, and they were later stopped in Madison.
Police said Chrisman stayed in the vehicle, and was taken into custody without incident. However, Stewart jumped out of the vehicle, and tried to run. He was apprehended by K-9, and had to be treated for wounds from a dog bite.
In the back seat of the vehicle, police found the trash bag with the pills inside. The pharmacy employees also later identified Stewart in a lineup as the robber.
Both men were charged with aggravated robbery. Stewart was held on $78,000 bond, while Chrisman was held on $50,000 bond.
