Just making sure I'm right
Its an American non-comedic Romance released since the year 2000 that was never nominated for an oscar, is not in the IMDB 250, and is not in any way based on a book. From your comments the movie spans somewhere around a 15 year window and at least the last third of the movie takes place in the "present day". A character in the film was awkward in high school but not an outcast, and "straightened out" (found love?) sometime during college. It has no element of science fiction, it is NOT a comedy (coupled with the fact it was never even nominated for an oscar rules out so many films)... most romantic movies are based on books, but no. It seems to be a somewhat obscure choice but several of us have seen it...

2. Does it take place in the present day (for when the film was made)? Yes. Edit: For #2 I was mistaken. The film spans like 15 years of their lives so yes and no. It is current for like the last 1/3 of the movie.

5. Would you describe the lead character in the film as an outsider/outcast? No... but everyone is a little awkward in high school. Things straightened out in college...
