TV: Torchwood

I just watched the first two episodes of this show, and I am SO INTO IT.

I never really got into Dr Who because it was all a bit too silly for my tastes, but I love this show (which is a spinoff from Dr Who)....the characters are all really well-developed, I like that there's a bit of moral ambiguity with the storylines, and I love that non-heterosexuality is treated as being something normal and not noteworthy in and of itself. There are gay or bi characters, but it's not their defining characteristic any moreso than being straight is anyone else's defining characteristic.

I also like the focus on quirky and weird sci-fi rather than OMG INDEPENDENCE DAY MASSIVE SPECIAL EFFECTS sci-fi.

It's intelligent and fun. Watch it!

I already saw the 1st series last year. Watching it in HD this year, I'm warming up to the show more. It still has some flaws, but it's a great show that offers a mature (and sometimes wickedly funny) look at issues of sexuality and morality, bunched together with your typical sci-fi alien and ghost stories. I'm glad to see it's finally getting some well deserved attention in the states. I still prefer Doctor Who, but it more than holds it own as a worthy companion show.

torchwood is pretty good. i prefer dr who, and to be honest if you prefer quirky and weird sci fi i think you need to watch a little more dr who. but torchwood still holds up its end as entertainment. in fact i'm looking forward to the next season of torchwood more than the next season of dr who, but only thanks to dr who...
