TV: The Sarah Silverman Program

^She leaves us feeling lukewarm sistah! And that is NOT a good thing! I'd rather someone elicit strong feelings in me..of either hate or luuuuurve. In between is just blah.

But you guys, the "EXPERT" Lovelife has told us that it's funny so . . . it must be funny. After all, lovelife is the ultimate and supreme authority on what we're supposed to laugh at.

LL i have to say... i rarely agree with anything you say (nothing personal, we just seem to have WAY differing opinions), but i DEFINITELY agree with you on sarah silverman.

the thing that BAFFLES me is that i have mundo friends who are blown away by everything toilet humor/shock value related, but claim to HATE sarah silverman because they think she's "the unfunniest horse faced jew on tv." i think it's all just over their head because here's the thing... i normally HATE humor that relies solely on shock value for laughs as i agree with something mentioned (by someone i forget now) earlier that it just seems desperate... a perfect example would be superbad... i thought that movie was one of the unfunniest pieces of garbage made in a LONG time, but it's because the jokes are weak, the deliveries are weak, and it just comes across as unintelligent dialogue written for no reason but to make people go "OH MY GOD HAHAHA... DUDE... DID YOU HEAR WHAT HE JUST SAID ABOUT FUCKING BITCHES! HAHAHA... BEER ME MAN! HIS COCK IS ON HIS BACK... HAHA THAT'S FUCKING BRILLIANT!" ironic. sarah silverman however is somehow subtle while being blunt. her brand of humor isn't necessarily original, but her style is undeniably her own. the smirks, the sarcasm, the total self absorption, the ignorance is bliss attitude... she just does it like nobody else does it.

i'm literally the only person i know that likes this show, but i can't help but feel that it's because it's over everyone's head. as self absorbed as that sounds. it's not even a case of elitism like some things i like could be misconstrued as... she GENUINELY makes me laugh and so does her show... the people who think it's utter garbage... to say the least... have the WORST taste in movies, music, tv, etc... it's no coincidence. and yes i know humor and art are subjective, but let's be honest... how many people here can HONESTLY say they wouldn't find the same dialogue (from her show) hilarious in a dumbed down version on some stupid ass hour and a half movie with a fat kid with a jew fro and a bunch of retard potheads who think laughing about dicks and farts is the shit?

it is what it is. sarah silverman is funnier, more intelligent, a better writer, a better comic, etc... than most comedians out there... and her show is CERTAINLY better than most if not all live action sitcoms on tv right now.

and to the person who mentioned carlos mencia... that's a fucking terrible reference because there are absolutely NO similarities other than the fact that they're on comedy central.

To be fair though, I don't think there's all that many live action sitcoms on TV at the moment. Now that might be due to me being in the UK and everything being repeats of Scrubs or King of Queens but the only way I could agree with that comment is if it's acknowledged that the bar for decent sitcoms has certainly dropped recently IMHO.

what an idiotic statement

the people who think it's utter garbage... to say the least... have the WORST taste in movies, music, tv, etc...

Wow. 8)

You don't like Sarah Silverman, you must have a crappy taste in music.

What the fuck.

I fail to see the correlation there. Seriously.

way to completely miss the point...

etc... <---- implies many other things... what I'M saying (read carefully) is that the people who think it's tripe also happen to think everything tripe is gold. it's really not THAT difficult to understand.

the correlation lies in the fact that they have piss poor judgement. subjective or not... when there's a common trend of liking shit quality everything... i think it's safe to say they wouldn't know quality if it bit them in the ass.

I just don't agree with generalizations like that.

We all have different tastes. To say a show is "above my head" and that if I don't like it, my tastes in everything else must also be horrible is not only pompous, presumptuous, and arrogant . . . it's also very close-minded.

you won't get an argument out of me, i know it's pompous and arrogant, but how many people can honestly say that they DON'T think they have the best taste in movies, music, tv, etc.? if you don't think you do, then why do you like what you like? and let's be honest... more than likely if you like something that someone else doesn't chances are you think you see something in it that they don't.

i will admit though that i didn't word that properly. i wasn't implying that if YOU don't like it it's over your head and you have horrible taste in everything, i'm speaking from my experiences and conversations with people... everyone who thinks it's utter garbage (emphasis on the utter garbage) that i've talked to has terrible taste in everything. i apologize for my lack of proper wording, but i still stick by what i say that it doesn't seem like a coincidence that the same people who like shit quality things (aka creations lacking any sort of heart and/or effort by my standards) also happen to dislike things that i think ARE quality. and i think the sarah silverman show is quality... so naturally, i'm going to think people who disagree just don't see the same things that i see (and i see all) and therefore have shitty taste. :D

i finally realized just wat it is that bothers me so much. She reminds me of a kid that is trying to be funny. Like a little, 3, 4 year old toddler. You know how they will do shit to try and get a reaction out of people. Stupid shit, out of bounds inappropriate shit, like saying "AAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSS!! Asss!! mommy!!!" in a department store and laughing about it becuz it brings them all kinds of attention. Or the really shitty behaved preschool kids that put their hand in the icing of the cake and shit like that.

She just reminds me of a excesively desperate version of that little ass-yelling cake smashing preschooler. Its weird. When I see her show I dont even think "oh she sucks" its more of a sad form of pity. Like i honestly dont even see her as being an adult. Its embarrassing to see her do all this shit to get a laugh on TV, when word is bond its like that shit translates in my head to a little girl in pull ups smashing shit and throwing shit off the shelf at a grocery store trying to get her moms attention.

I also think its hilarious the people that love her are so 'highbrow" and educated and 'appreciate good art' and they are into all this other pretentious garbage, and then pick the most dirty-ass-mouth wanna be comedian to put up on this shitty pedestal. Like I would think with the other type of shit people be goin on about, that they would like some kind of avant garde comedy that is a joke about comedy or some freaky over everybodys head type of shit like that, but no, heres Mr Impeccable Tastes dying over this duck-quack-sounding-voice douchewhore talkin about 'makin doodies." Its pretty funny to me I get a kick out of seein people like that enjoy her show at least it shows they can lighten the fuck up once in a while even if I dont like the humor so maybe the show is a good thing, it keeps them too busy to be snooty to us pathetic non film critic types.;)

alright, cool, that makes a bit more sense. :)

You're right, I do think I have a good taste in entertainment, whatever it is. I don't listen to anything on the radio (i hate it) and rarely watch any television since it's mostly crap. To be honest, I find very few shows watchable at all. Maybe that has something to do with it, the fact I'm so picky.

But anyways, I consider myself a somewhat intelligent human being who is quick to pick up on any subtle comedic nuisances thrown my way. Silverman just doesn't do it for me. Neither does South Park or Family guy.

hahaha she said poop! hahahah she made fun of minorities and gays! hahahahah now she's making fun of religion!!!!

OMG THIS BITCH IS SO TABOO!!!!!! hahahahahahaha 8)

Give me a break.

well good... now that we're on the same page, you realize that i don't think YOU'RE shitty... just your taste in shows. ;)

jk. :D

seriously though, i absolutely HATE family guy, so i can relate to you as everyone i know loves that show and i always have to express my distaste for it. we obviously have different tastes in style (probably to an extent anyways). if you don't like the sarah silverman show, that's fine, but... sucks to be you. :D

i still think she's hilarious, i just think that she's got some sort of classy, subtle (but not at all subtle... hard to explain), unique style of toilet humor that makes me laugh. like i said too, i normally can't stand low brow shit and it bothers me as i agree that it makes comedy seem so desperate (that and terrible segways are my biggest pet peeves in comedy), but there's just something about her style that i like compared to others.

so we'll just have to agree to disagree on this topic. :D

btw, sorry for sounding like a pompous ass... i hadn't had my meds and were up for like... 3940834 hours straight.

It's all good man, no worries. :D

Maybe I just have to watch more of it, I dunno. I can't stand her forced style OR subject matter. BLEH. It's horrible.

You're right. We're going to have to agree to disagree.

I like family guy more than I like sarah silverman.. I mean, shes pretty, but her humor does come off as desperate sometimes. In family guy, I feel like there is a lot of wit put behind some of the jokes, I feel like in sarah silverman she just blurts out the first thing that comes to her mind which is obviously some sort of fecal matter. The only episode I enjoyed was where she painted her face black and pretended to be black. NOT because that was funny, because that was stupid, but her two friends were smoking weed and I ALMOST laughed. Other than I will have to agree with the other posts.. Sometimes her show appears so desperate that I am embarassed just watching it.

^ understandable. though i feel the same about family guy. i think the jokes are weak desperate attempts to be funny based on no connection to anything relevant to a plot. like... family guy to me just makes me annoyed because nothing has anything to do with anything. i know the randomness is what some people like, and i like randomness for the most part, but this show just tries to be random for being randoms' sake it seems.

not to turn this into a sarah silverman vs. family guy thread, but that's the reason i can't deal with that show.

Id like to make a family guy vs something thread. Like fam guy vs american dad

I hope Family Guy hasn't lowered the standards of TV so much that Sarah Silverman's show looks like a God-send. :(

Say it ain't so!!

Very tactfully said, you epitome of a gentlemen.

While we're throwing around ad-homs, do you think that perhaps your post was fueled by a wee bit of jealousy?

Cause I'll bet you dollars to donuts that you WISH you could live an upper-middle class lifestyle in New York City by getting paid to perform almost every single night alongside some of the greatest comics in the world, instead of sitting in a cubicle or maybe even *gasp* your very own office all day, watching the clock until your boss lets you go home, so you can crack open a Coors Light and pay me your hard earned money so I can tell you jokes you probably couldn't even understand, let alone create, you insecure wanker.

I shall concede that I was just pretty harsh, but in my opinion, you brought it upon yourself, Max.

Virtually every single one of the best comedians in the world ALL agree that she's a comic genius.

I freely admit that I can't tell so-so oil paintings from great oil-paintings, but that the greatest oil painters in the world CAN.

Could it be POSSIBLE that Sarah Silverman is widely acknowledged BY COMICS as one of the greatest comics EVER, and that you, as a non-comic, simply don't get it?
