Queer as Folk

I had the pleasure of renting the first volume of this the other day. I thought it was pretty funny/cheesey. I'm sure this show is an over-dramatization of the single gay life-style, but I'm sure it's not far off. I can't wait to rent volume 2. :)

Besides the bad acting, the storyline is pretty entertaining.

Has anyone seen this series? What did you think?

I have all the series on DVD. I'm addicted. The story gets better and better and more dramatic. So if you're into drama you will love it.

I managed to catch a few episodes of this show on TV. But now I am never home to see it, didin't know it was on DVD, must put a lazy Sunday aside to watch the series!

I was all set to hate this show before I saw it, and even had one of my patented Anti-Gay Scene Rants all primed to go....which pretty much goes something along the lines of "we're not all like that, stop perpetuating stereotypes blah blah blah"....

But then I sat down and watched it and realised that it's really just another drama series with gay people instead of straight, and they're all about as well-developed as any other character you're likely to see on TV. So yeah, I do enjoy it (not to mention in the US version some of the guys are HOT ;)), and I think it's a way more healthy representation for gay men than something like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy which makes us all look like sexless vaccuous little fairies.... :p

I've never seen the US version - the UK version was fucking great. (It seems weird to me that there even is an American version, the title's a pun that's very English - it's a northern saying "There's nowt [nothing] so queer as folk" - meaning people are the strangest thing in the world. But I digress).

How raunchy was the US version - the Brit one was incredibly explicit - not much actual nudity, but everything was implied, schoolboys giving blowjobs and getting fucked in teh ass and stuff. Decent plotline, and the acting wasn't too bad. I was a fan.

i looooooved this...i saw the whole first two seasons on DVD in two nights! i still cant believe the actor who plays Brian is straight. Hoooo! He is GORGEOUS!

^^
yeah he's hot as hell!

the us version is def. very explicit as well. there was many a nude scene. they didn't show the penises, but that's okay. :) there was plenty of ass fucking and dick sucking which is always entertaining. :)

Didn't know there were 2 versions. I think it is only the U.S version I have seen.

As I said before I am way out of date with anything that is on TV, it rarely gets switched on.

i loved teh UK version... but the characters there werent as ... loveable as these are... that could be b-c of the duration of the actualy series... and the length of a british season...

but the "Brian" character in the UK series never really turned out to be an endearing guy... and the ending was lame.... i mean, pulling a gun on ameriacns?? dont' you know we ALL have guns??????? ;)

at any rate, Season 2 of the US show was laaaaaaame...

just a series one stories strung together that usually ended after 1 or 2 episodes... notice how very little has come over frmo season 2?

Season 3 was rockin'... altho' Ted's fall frlom grace was awfully quick.

who hits rock bottom that fast on meth??

i mean, come on!

and they continued with the jipping of minutes from season 2... the average show season 2 and 3 were like 40 minutes.... that's bunk. And both season 2 and 3 were short..... 15 episodes compared to Season 1's 22.

Season 3 is where it got good again, tho... and that's when i got hooked again... Season 4 is looking pretty good, too. I even like Hunter, now. He's got some funny-ass bitch lines...

they are making the habit of 'dropping' some things alittle too quickly... the whole Justin vigilante thing could have gone on alittle longer...

i knew Vick was going to die this season... i didn't think it'd be so soon....

there were no previews for the next episode after Debbie's XMAS PARTY" episode.... so i'm assuming this weekend is a repeat.... but that's ok.

I need a rest.

oh, and I like QUEER EYE FOR THE STRAIGHT GUY... there are only 2 really effeminate guys.... the others are pretty non-swishy (except when they are being catty or 'flaming out')

and if they WERE all flammy, who cares...

FLAMERS ARE A PART OF OUR CULTURE... deal with it.

and, in the US, it was the flaming fags and drag queens that stood up to cops during STONEWALL... not the 'butch' men who passed for straight... they were tucked away nicely in their closets with their wives and 2 kids...

so before we start bashing the femme fags, remember, the entire gay world owes a debt of gratitude to those flammy fags.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for the drag queens and other gay folk who have stood up to what society told them was wrong and in a lot of cases suffered physical violence just so they could be themselves...those guys are fucking amazing. And I don't have a problem with effeminate gay guys per se....the world is made up of a lot of different people, and if someone likes chucking on a dress and a wig because it makes them feel good, or they speak in a lisp because they just do, who am I to judge? It's not like I'm without fault....

My problem is that Queer Eye For The Straight Guy is a show about 5 campy men who run along and tell straight men how fucked they are because they don't shave the right way to keep baby-smooth skin by the time they're 30. Well guess what? There are a lot of gay men who couldn't give a flying fuck whether they're pretty enough for the scene, or whether they're buying the right label clothing to fit in with every other pretentious insecure motherfucker out there. There are 16 & 17 year old gay guys who need to be told that they're okay as they are, that you can be gay and like rap and heavy metal and have a dirty room, but instead they see shows like Queer Eye and they get told that to be gay you have to be a prissy image-obsessed queen. And for that reason alone, there are heaps of guys who have that much more trouble coming out; they don't fit in with their straight peers because they're gay, they don't fit in with their gay peers because they're not gay enough.

Just to try and get this back on topic....the reason I like Queer as Folk is because it's pretty much fluff, but there are a variety of people shown...a couple of the guys are cartoonists, one of the guys is a dad, some of them fuck for the sake of fucking and some of them are true romantics. It's not a bevy of interior designers and fashionistas who exist to sell an image of what's trendy at the moment, because apparently that's what gay life is about.

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy shows the absolutely most inoffensive Uncle Toms that you could get 5 gay men to be. Queer As Folk is just a bit of fluff in the end, but it's a bit of fluff that goes that much further to say that being gay isn't something you do to entertain the straight folk, it's something you are and there's nothing wrong with it.

I didnt see it when the series was shown on Channel 4 UK Version but my friend has all the series on DVD and one boring/hungover Sunday i put on the first episode and ended up watching the whole lot.

Brilliant and addictive!

ps How hot is Aiden Gillen!!8o

never been my place to get offended for a group of people of which im not a part but that show and all the fanfare surrounding it makes me sick to my stomach

I adore Queer as Folk. I've only seen the US version, but I love it. Queer Eye, pfft. Another so called reality tv show that can just kiss my ass. I can't believe that anyone who is gay would like this show. I finally whatched the South Park episode about Queer Eye and I agree with Parker & Stone's view 100%.

i now appreciate physix's spoiler of a post just so i know that the series will bounce back after season 2. we're almost 1/2 way thru the second season and i cant even believe it's the same show. whirly and i were so hooked on season 1 and have been nothing but disappointed with the poorly written and scattered 2nd season.

also, i've noticed a very sharp rise in mel and lindsay's face time in season 2. i never thought i'd be complaining about an increase in lesbian love scenes in a queer show but i have to admit it seems cheap and forced. i really enjoyed their wedding episode but apart from that i wish they'd fade back into the background.

all in all though this is one of the best shows i've ever seen. the first season hooked me so completely that if i would've seen this on showtime and the dvd's werent available i would've gone out and got showtime just to see what happened next.

now damn it get your heads outta your asses and bring back some drama *hiss*
