TV: Poker

i don't really watch any of them, unless i'm somewhere they happen to be on. i think watching people play cards is pretty boring.

have they helped my play? probably not although i have won a bunch of money from idiots that think they're chris moneymaker.

In Australia we had a series called Joker Poker, with C/D grade celebrity comics as the contestants.

it was hosted by Adam Spencer, who is a pretty funny ex-radio personality, and he had some ex poker tour guy helping him commentate.

The comedian's jokes were terrible and most of them were pretty crappy poker players, but it was pretty interesting to watch a game as it is when laypeople play, without the smoke and mirrors, with people who need to be reminded of the rules and who giggle when they bluff etc :)

when i first started noticing these on tele i just flipped by with the attitude of what a bore.
and then i watched a few different games, always in the last few hands.
and still i feel... what a bore.
not quite as bad as i expected but sort of like watching snooker/pool on tv. you watch a good fifteen minutes for that one split second of money and glory that is interesting.

I struggle to understand why this has suddenly become popular for TV, at first i tried to get into it, but i just don't see the appeal.I don't mind playing it though.

actually i'm digging the High Stakes Poker show on the gameshow channel.

if you're not familiar with it it's basically just a really high stakes cash game.

the last episode i saw, not sure if it was a re-run, Daniel Negreanu had lost 750k of his own $$$.

i used to hate the celebrity poker show, because all the celebs' really suck, but Phil Gordon is cool as hell so it makes up for the suckiness of the players.

the best produced show would have to be the world poker tour.

but the best show overall is the world series of poker based on prestige, $ and the spectacle factor.

also the learn from the pros, on fox sports, show is kinda cool because even though i've been playing poker for over 20 years, not texas hold 'em(only in the last 4 years or so),i still learn things from this show.

edit: i forgot to mention that the world poker tour has the Shana Hiatt factor.

Defenitly good to watch and learn from the top pros. I enjoy it alot when it's top pros vs top pros which mostly comes up the the WPT. Celebrity poker pretty much sucks and the WSOP is good sometimes.

Like someone said before High Stakes Poker is pretty good on GSN; it's just one huge cash game between top players for all their own money.

I watch alot of poker on tv bc straight up I love it, I hate it though sometimes because it makes me just want to go to the casino all the time and play.

I like WSOP/ESPN for production and announcers, WPT for the play/players (although I hate the structure at the end of tournaments, gives to luck too much), and imo, High Stakes Poker on GSN is the best overall. Best players, bet plays, lots of table talk, and a cool, back-room, big time cash game feel. The Heads Up Tournament on NBC Sports is good too despite the horrible announcers. Just don't like Celbrity Poker really.

I watch any poker that is on above anything else. I could watch NL everyday all day and be completely entertained. I will say, though, I enjoy the WSOP and the WPT Poker tours on the travel channel.

my apologies to anyone who is offended by my post...

ok... so i didnt read ALL the posts here, but most. and what i have to say may have been said, but if not then whatever. personally in my opinion... id rather a mass abortion with the destroyed fetus' spilled all over the floor and me having to drink them all through a straw be on tv than fucking poker. i absolutely cannot STAND poker being on fucking tv. now everyone and their fucking brother seems to think they're a god damned professional poker player. well im sorry, but if you can be famous and make shitloads of money on nothing more than a little fucking luck and about 20% math skills, then i sure hope you spend your money on something good, cause youre too stupid to appreciate that kind of luxury.

poker on tv is the biggest waste of money ever spent. anyone who actually watches and enjoys it needs some sort of hobby. im not saying im so much greater or that i watch the most awesomist of awesome television shows, but for christs' sake, at least i do SOMETHING worthwhile in my life, as opposed to watch a bunch of lazy assholes gamble their life savings away. if i were to have gambled a life away on go fish or war, im sure that some people would say "OMFG THAT GUY IS AN IDIOT!!!" but when professional go fish or war comes along i would have been a genius!

point is, i wouldnt enjoy watching some loser sit around watching tv so the likelihood of me enjoying watching some dude play poker til his eyes bleed is not very good.

i'd rather watch a baby get hit by a car.

would playing poker be concidered a hobby?

golfers watch golf.

bowlers watch bowling.

gamblers watch gambling.

and its a game of high skill, watching provides a lot of mental stimulation for the ardent player

uhh..yeah i second this.

i suggest that if you have such strong feelings on the subject, maybe YOU are the one who needs to get a hobby. 8)
