Alright, call me shallow, call me uncouth (sp?) Call me a heathen of television viewing....
BUT I LOVE LAW AND ORDER

It is the only show that I can watch an entire DAY of (including all the ones i've seen, which is most of them) and not get bored. I schedule my day and work around new episodes. Right now, Im watching my DVD collection of the first season of SVU

am I alone on this?

Yeah, it's a quality program, consistant writing and usually a competent cast.

One thing that bothers me though - through all the many years of the series...

Why don't people STOP WHAT THEY ARE DOING when they get questioned about something as serious as a murder of a friend or co-worker?! It seems every episode has a scene in some place of business, a warehouse or a restaurant or bar or bakery or whatever - and the cops are coming to talk about a HOMICIDE - and the person is too busy to stop working while he gets questioned, lol, no lawyer or anything.

I dunno, I think I'd at least take a coffeebreak and think things through - absent-mindedly babbling in the middle of work is not a good way to give accurate information about a murder investigation, one that might even land you in jail for the rest of your life... =D

this is indeed a good call- I also marvel at how the people (suspects etc) on the show are so casual when talking to the cops. No one EVER seems scared. Lord knows I would be TERRIFIED if detectives came after me for any reason, even if i knew i was innocent

anyway, yes, it is still quality. I think the writing is fan-freaking-tastic.
 
My Guiltiest of Guilty Pleasures

Oh man I am a LAW & ORDER freak. I watch all three series & have seen just about every L&O ever aired. Right now my fave of the three is SVU.

Whew, its finally in the open. I had an easier time coming out of the closet regarding my sexuality than I did admitting that I am a L&O fanatic. Even my secret XENA obsession was easier to fess up to as one could chalk it up to camp. Tell people that L&O is appointment TV for you & they look at you quizzically & suggest you get out of the house more often.

I agree that the cliche of the people who cannot stop their busy day to answer a question regarding a homicide is getting old. I would be like HOLY FUCKING SHIT!! I'd have to take the rest of the WEEK off! I think its done for dramatic streamlining puposes. If you want to show the guy works at a fishmarket & you don't want to waste time showing a bit character waiting on customers you have him doing his job while giving smartass answers.

I live in NYC & all three L&O's are filmed entirely in the city (as opposed to NYPD BLUE which shoots only a few exterior shots & 95% is done in LA). The cast & crew are known citywide for being among best & most accomadating. Many movie & TV shows will invade your neighborhood for location shoots & act like they own the place. They'll block your street for several hours past the permit time, do damage they claim was already there & have no problem making lots of noise at all hours of the evening. Not the L&O crews though. Perhaps its because they have to film all around the city week after week & must rely on the goodwill of NYers (which is NOT easy to get & keep), but they are truly gracious & professional. When you see production trucks in your neighborhood--& I live in the East Village which sees location film & TV production every week--you always groan but when you learn its one of the L&O shows or SEX IN THE CITY you breathe a sigh of relief because you know they will be courteous & will get out ASAP.

My fave character is of course Lenny Briscoe. After all these years Jerry Orbach still plays it fresh. I loved that one episode which was a HOMICIDE crossover where Briscoe worked with Munch. I would LOVE to have a season where Munch & Briscoe worked together. The mind reels at the one liners they would come up with!
 
Big fan of the originals. I haven't really watched any of the spin-off shows though since I don't really watch primetime TV anymore. I'm kinda pissed that there aren't like 3 episodes in a row on during the day anymore. That was the best - come home from morning classes and just veg out with L&O for the afternoon.

Not sure if I am the only one here, but does anyone else hate the latest ADA? Why does she talk out of the side of her damned mouth?! My roommate despises her and just screams at the TV whenever she comes on.
 
Munch has a huge part in the first season of SVU (as im finding out from watching the DVD's,) and his character was pretty different from what its grow into today. I suggest to anyone who likes SVU that they should rent the first season and at least watch the first two episodes. quality
 
vincent d'onofrio is one of my favorite actors (detc. gorran and weirdly enough thor of adventures in babysitting)

the new ADA was the muderer in a pervious episode where a woman was found hanged prusumably by her own hand while attempting some fun during autoerotic asphyxiation... but really it was her nasty kinky friend (ADA i think)
this has happened for a few now regulars such as the ada and van buren
 
My favorite is SVU. when I had access to cable I'd watch it on USA all the time :) they play it about 5 times on certain nights, it seems. I haven't been able to see Criminal Intent as much, but I do think that Vincent d' Onofrio (sp) is a great actor, he's really intense.

He was THOR in Adventures of babysitting? REALLY? Wow he sure changed, lol. I I watched that movie whenever it was on USA as well, heh.

On SVU the ADA, a blonde lady, was sent into "witness protection" because she got involved with some mafia case. Did anybody see that one? I really liked it, and i was sad to see her go, but I think her replacement is pretty decent herself.

I plan on getting the SVU DVD myself :D

oh shit, i did NOT realize vincent d'onofrio was thor in adventures in babysitting...one of my favorite movies as a youngster. :)
I am a huge Criminal Intent fan because he is in it....

I like the original Law & Order and I like SVU too. I do not like CI at all, I can't stand the sops smugness or something. Plus the scripts and plots just do not seem to be as good.
 
since the Law and Order thread is now the "A tribute to Vincent d'Onofrio" thread...he was good as the serial killer in 'the cell' with j.lo...he wqas much slimmer then.

i am baffled by the fact that someone can not like CI, i think some of his past roles(except THOR) helped him become an almost demented detective
 
I am an ABSOLUTE fanatic of Law and Order. My parents met Angie Harmon at Lake Tahoe a couple years ago.. I was consumed with jealousy.

My favorite characters have been:
- Adam Schiff "make em a deal"
- Lennie Briscoe
- Jack McCoy
- Abbie Carmichael
 
I love all the shows and I can watch them all day. Old ones, new ones - They are all good.

One thing - I would hate to come across detectives & DAs like the ones in these shows.
