Funny woman Pamela Stephenson opens up about 'rape' ordeal in autobiography
TELEVISION psychologist Pamela Stephenson, star of Eighties sketch show Not The Nine O'Clock News, has told how she lost her virginity when she was 'raped' by a heroin addict at only 16.
In a frank and highly personal extract from her autobiography, The Varnished Untruth, the former Strictly Come Dancing star and wife of comedian Billy Connolly reveals that the ordeal happened when she was a teenager growing up in Sydney, Australia.
She later discovered she had been infected with a sexually transmitted disease by her attacker.
Miss Stephenson, whose memoirs are serialised today in The Mail on Sunday’s Review section, recalls: "At 16 I discovered the thrill of sneaking out at night. At first I met up with fellow teenage folk singers and sat in a local park strumming for hours, but eventually I found my way to older, more exciting - and dangerous - men.
"I was still a virgin at this point. I was fairly ignorant about sex, but I had an inkling it might be the route to my desired destruction, so when I met a 35-year-old heroin junkie who lured me to his flat, I put up little resistance.
"It was a horrible, painful experience out of which I got nothing but glandular fever and gonorrhoea. I suppose it was rape. What was the age of consent back then? I don’t even know. I don’t want to know. It was just terrible but I thought I deserved it, and worse."
Miss Stephenson, 62, says her ordeal was compounded when her parents, both university lecturers, learned of her diagnosis and threw her out of the family home. She says her father told her: "You were supposed to keep yourself clean until marriage. You are no longer my daughter."
She adds: "I remember the feeling well, because I still experience it every time someone rejects me, even in some relatively small way."
Miss Stephenson later moved to London and carved out a career as a comedy actress. She met comedian Connolly on the set of Not The Nine O’Clock News and the pair soon became one of the country’s best-known showbusiness couples. She later retrained as a clinical psychologist and became an author.
