TV: Carnivale

Ssecond season either started last weekend or is starting this coming weekend.

I don't have HBO, though.

Yes I saw the season opener. Look's like it's going to be getting good really soon (I think all the build up is finally going to erupt into some major action).

ahh..I love this show. I am currently in the process of working my way through the entire first season on DVD...one more disc to go. Sadly, I don't have HBO so I probably wont be seeing the second season until that comes out on DVD also.

I don't have HBO anymore, so I haven't been able to watch. :(

I suppose I'll just wait for the DVD to come out. It's definitely the best new show I've seen in years...up there with the likes of Twin Peaks and the Sopranos.

Yeah, me to. To get HBO, I have to goto digital cable.

The last episode I saw was where The boy was inside the tent of the old man and the old man was performing readings before an audience.

That show is cool.

Come to think of it, I am missing out on the Showtime show Dead Again . I think that is the title. The show where the girl is a reaper. Cool.

I've seen the whole first season on FX289 and the second is about to start.I'm totally hooked but can't help but wonder, each new episode raise's more question than it answers. It seems like i've been watching it forever and still haven't got a fucking clue whats reall going on.
I mean i get the basic setup but feel there will soon be a revelation and a kinda "arrr right now i get it" scenario.
Looking forward to the forth day of "24" starting soon too.

^^
I've been thinking the same thing. It's into the 3rd episode of the second season and nothing has been answered. I'm starting to get really frustrated. They should at least throw us a bone or two! If I don't see some answers soon I think I'm going to give up on Carnivale. But I always get hooked because in the previews for the next week they make it look like something is finally going to happen (but it never does). :\

spoiler alert (?)

This show is really good. They just showed the first season here in Australia on the ad-free network in double episode installments, now we're downloading the new series as it comes out. Seen the first 2 episodes and it seems they're making things a bit clearer and faster paced for us somewhat attention deficit types.

The line from the first episode of series two, where Hawkins is talking to Management after offing the professer to save snake lady... Management says, like he's forcing us into an IQ test, "Scutter was to me as the Preacher is to you" and then reveals himself as the russian from hawkins' dreams. Does this mean the russian is also the preacher's father? And if so, is Management/The Russian an evildoer forcing Hawkins to do something wrong, or did the russian spawn an evildoer and seeks the help from the good prophet son of an evildoer to fix things or what the fuck?

I spose it will all become obvious in shows to come and I wait with baited breath and much impatience.

Also, isn't Samson from the backwards scenes from Twin Peaks? Gotta love the mystery!

And yeah, I really love the dustbowl era/setting, I only read Grapes of Wrath recently so it's a nice tie in for me.

(edit: on further reading of thread, Samson was indeed in Twin Peaks... another tie in ;) )

At first I thought the management was evil but now I think he might be the good guy. Especially since he told Scutter's son not to "tempt him" by trying to heal him. If he were evil I don't think he would have been worried about it.

The preacher definitely seems evil and I think might be the "usher" of the apocolyspe. It's already been revealed that he's a demon. (if you heard the whole story about how the father found him and saved him and his sister's life)

Somehow I think that the torch is being passed from management guy to Scutter's son and from Scutter to the preacher. It seems very similiar to how there were different versions of Neo in the matrix. It's very complex and interesting. :)

I missed last night's episode but I think they have a repeat of it on tonight.

^Yeah they've already called the Preacher the Usher, when he does his radio broadcasts, more than he physically says comes through and he's now attracting all sorts of freaks, who I'm sure the Preacher's sister will kill in a fit of jealousy :) But maybe not.

"Somehow I think that the torch is being passed from management guy to Scutter's son and from Scutter to the preacher..... It's very complex and interesting. "

If this is so, it forms a very nice cross doesn't it? ;) but I'd like to know how these torches are being passed if not by genetics. But perhaps genes have nothing to do with it, it's more about receptacles.

I don't think Management is evil either, but ya never know it could become a plot twist! Probably won't though. At first I thought Management might be Scutter, but it appears he isn't. Hell yes I wanna see what happens next!

And that 'tempting me' bit, I didn't know wtf was going on there, I was hoping it would become apparant later. I don't see how him being healed would be a bad thing, apart from the fact that stuff dies when hawkins heals people.

Bumping this thread for anyone still watching the series, because it's getting really fucking cool!

I'm a week behind america and so much shit's gone down. In a minor point- a couple of episodes ago, Snakelady, in a trance wrote something about *someone* being the Omega in lipstick on her mirror.

Hell I'm trying real hard not to spoil anything here so I'll just say this. Apparantly the whole alpha and omega thing, like many themes of Carnivale, comes from Revelations. Now I never read the bible so I didn't know what it meant, but if you listen to the kickarse Johnny Cash tune 'When the Man comes around' which is based on revelations, he might well be giving away the ending. Whatever the outcome, the tune throws light on the whole Omega thing, and the thorn tree, and ... well here's the lyrics.

WHEN THE MAN COMES AROUND - Johnny Cash

And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder: One of the four beasts saying: "Come and see." And I saw. And behold, a white horse.
There's a man goin' 'round takin' names. An' he decides who to free and who to blame. Everybody won't be treated all the same. There'll be a golden ladder reaching down. When the man comes around.

The hairs on your arm will stand up. At the terror in each sip and in each sup. For you partake of that last offered cup, Or disappear into the potter's ground. When the man comes around.

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin'. Multitudes are marching to the big kettle drum. Voices callin', voices cryin'. Some are born an' some are dyin'. It's Alpha's and Omega's Kingdom come.

And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree. The virgins are all trimming their wicks. The whirlwind is in the thorn tree. It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Till Armageddon, no Shalam, no Shalom. Then the father hen will call his chickens home. The wise men will bow down before the throne. And at his feet they'll cast their golden crown. When the man comes around.

Whoever is unjust, let him be unjust still. Whoever is righteous, let him be righteous still. Whoever is filthy, let him be filthy still. Listen to the words long written down, When the man comes around.

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin'. Multitudes are marchin' to the big kettle drum.

In measured hundredweight and penny pound. When the man comes around.

And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

The message on the mirror was "Sofie is the Omega." Right now it appears that the battle of influences between Hawkins and Brother Justin over Sofie's alignment and more importantly, her soul, is a microcosm of the larger struggle over the world or at least America's soul. It seems clear now that Sofie is Justin's child from when he raped her mother. She may or may not also be knocked up with Hawkins' kid.

The thing that confuses me most is Iris. She killed all those kids and the cleaning lady, and she's helped Brother Justin do all kinds of ill shit, but it seems like she isn't completely down with the devil, either. Norman (the old preacher who had a stroke or something) is clearly good and she seems aligned with him. I dunno.

Did anyone else get real amped up when Jonesy finally showed the whole Carnivale how Ben Hawkins had fixed him up? I'd been waiting to see what would happen when it came time to acknowledge whats really going on with the whole carnival group, it seemed like the camp would split into those under Lodz/Bearded Lady (the evil ones) and those under the midget and Hawkins (the good ones) but seeing a genuine miracle seems to have made most of them faithful to Hawkins. However, Lodz and the Bearded Lady aren't going to just give up without a fight, I want to know how all that plays into the battle between Hawkins and Justin.

Anyways, I really like the way good and evil are presented somewhat ambiguously, and that the power to heal is coupled with the necesity of taking life, as well. That could explain why Justin has done some good in the world (charity, etc.) because his desire to subjugate and hold power has unintentional by-products much like Hawkins' desire to heal and to do good.

Next week is the season finale, but are they really coming back again? I was surprised when they did this year and am very happy about it because the second season was much faster paced and more eventful than the first. What to do for an encore if Armageddon is the finale?

I missed this last episode. Hopefully I can catch it tonight (they usually have a rerun on one of the HBO channels).

Next weeks episode is the season finale isn't it? Just when it's starting to get good. :\

What you just said right there sums up the entire 1st, 2nd, and 3rd season of Carnivale

Now why couldn't this just have been a movie!!?!? :X

I hate having to watch 5 episodes back to back and then miss 3 shows in between and then pick it up 2 shows later.

I freakin HATE HBO TV series programming :|

Yeah, i saw the first episode, then saw another one a few weeks ago and was totally confused, so i have been watching as many as possible in the last week. I am already to episode 3 of series 2. This'll be the last one tonight until i get some work done.

Edit: I dig the tatoo, and the awesome imagery of the whole series. I loved the atomic bomb sequence. I kinda miss Lodes even though he was a pretty twisted guy, he was a great character for the series.

Tech, is there a season 3 in the works? From the ending of series 2 it looks like there will be. Otherwise it's ended without any resolution and just leaves us with more questions. I hope it doesn't drag on forever. I really like this show but I WANT RESOLUTION. I hope, if there's 3rd season, that they'll wrap it up by the end of this one and not cheapen it by introducing lame plotlines to keep it going. It's all about hawkins and....

SPOILERS.... (don't look if you haven't seen)

...

....

What, is it Hawkins vs Sofie now??? Now that Sofie has somehow got Ben's powers (is she pregnant with his child?) and she's brought Justin back to life, is Justin now a normal man or is he the same as before if not worse? Will we ever see Jonesy or Norman again or are they dead for ever? What was Justin's sister's plan? It seemed like she was ultra evil but really she wants to somehow end Justin's reign, how will she do this if at all? She know's Sofies the daughter, the omega to alpha, what's she gonna do about it? Sofie shot Jonesy for fucks sake! There's no hope left for her. Will Ben survive the hook wound? Of course he will, but how's he gonna save the day now? And what is there to be saved? What the fuck.

^^^^

Of Course there will be a season 3
This is what HBO series programming is all about!
If they brought back Deadwood, then they definitely will bring back Carnivale!

The season finale had some high and low moments.

(Spoiler)

Sofie blowing Jonesy away was like a kick in the gut. Poor guy goes from a lonely alcoholic cripple to a healthy man with a wife who lets him fuck her in the ass only to lose it all a couple weeks later? That's a raw deal. But, Sofie turning evil wasn't exactly unpredictable... I wish there was a little bit more of a clear climax this season, but I guess they got the word HBO wants a season 3. I hope they don't pull a Sopranos and lose their focus on bullshit subplots.

As far as HBO programming goes, someone mentioned how frustrating it is to miss episodes and not know whats going on... that's why they play them like five times a week on HBO, HBO2, HBO West and HBO2 West. Personally, I don't even watch network tv for anything other than sports (and the Simpsons when I remember about it) anymore... all the HBO series I have been into (Sopranos, Band of Brothers, Deadwood, and Carnivale) just strike me as light years beyond our regular programming in terms of sophistication, artistic merit, and general ability to engage me enough to clear my schedule for a set time week after week.

HBO cancels 'Carnivale'

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- HBO has pulled up stakes on "Carnivale," opting not to order a third season of the circus-set Dust Bowl drama.

Prospects for a "Carnivale" renewal have appeared bleak since the sophomore season wrapped in March; the show didn't increase its viewership, and series creator/executive producer Daniel Knauf already signed on to produce a series for the rival Showtime cable channel.

"We have decided not to renew 'Carnivale,' " said Carolyn Strauss, president of entertainment at HBO, in a statement. "We feel the two seasons we had on the air told the story very well and we are proud of what everyone associated with the show has accomplished."

Those bastards! The damn story was never finished. And the third season could have been the one to explain how it all came together. This really pisses me. I invested 2 years of watching this show. F-the people at HBO for cancelling it. And here's a tip for them, if you hadn't dragged out the show's story so slowly (and I mean PAINFULLY slow) maybe you wouldn't have lost so many viewers. :X
