HBO is producing a new show about polygamy and the underside of the mormon world...and it's damn good. Bill Paxton plays a hardeware store owner and polygamist. The show follows the three wives and Bill through thier lives and thier hangups. After only two epi's, I'm sticking around for more...

I watched the first one almost all the way through and it didn't spark my interest :\ (well, the concept does, but not the show ;))

i have watched the first two as well, and i like it alot. bill paxton/pullman/alec baldwin is definitely good. and chloe sevigny really pisses me off by her vindictive bitchy conniving. and gennifer goodwin is really hot. great show. interested to see where things go with the "father poisoned" plotline. during the first episode i thought it was Roman, but in the second episode they weren't quite as subtle when showing him give the father the drink and usually, at least in good shows, what they want you to htink is different from the eventual reality. though, i could be wrong

I'm really intrigued by the relationship with Roman and Bill's father, and Bill and father. The hardware store details will get dirty, and Roman is going to bring some shit on Bill. But you're right on with the poisoning being the central hook at this point.

:D

I am starting to really love this show!! What a good replacement for Six Feet Under; I was really sad when that ended. HBO needed another good family drama that makes people totally uncomfortable but is irresistible to watch anyway.

Everything is setting up for their family's secret to be found out very soon...the nosy neighbor, Roman's appearance at the hardware store, the security people coming in (plus all the attention from the alarms :)), etc., etc.

Plus, I totally predict that the oldest daugher and her new friend (it's Deb from Napoleon Dynamite!) are going to have a lesbian relationship!

The first episode was so-so, but the ones since have been quite good, IMO (though a long way from "Six Feet Under"). Still, I can't help but watch, all the more so because it's a vision of a subculture that few Americans know much about.

My obs:

--I can't stand Nicolette, and she seemed *entirely* too happy to see Roman. Does anyone else wonder what they were doing in that room? Sevigny's acting is great, though; she can convey so much cattiness with the subtlest eyebrow raise or accent. I won't lie; I loved the lukewarm response to her son's birthday party. :D

--I find it interesting that Bill despises Roman--who is indeed a reprehensible character--yet still endorses polygamy, and even married one of his daughters. I thought the latter revelation was a bombshell.

--Harry Dean Stanton is great as Roman.

I don't think the daughter and her co-worker friend will have a relationship, though I do think that there will always be tension between them because of their totally different religious stances.

My new "After Sopranos" special. ;)

^I stand by my prediction! ;) ;)

You're right, this show isn't nearly as good as Six Feet Under (at least not yet). I'm just glad there's a show on like this instead of another one like Deadwood, Carnivale or Rome; I just couldn't get into those.

i haven't really liked this show, which is surprising because i'm usually a big fan of HBO shows.

<<Remember how he stormed over to her house after that friendly neighbor left?>>

Interesting--I didn't see that in a sexual context, but rather as his stated reason that he was worried that the neighbors would find out about their living situation. In retrospect though, you may be right. We'll see. ;)

Yes, at first it seemed as though it was due to his dad's fatherly advice, bel, and at the time i believe it was. but after a few more scenes, it is obvious it will lead to more, he is a weak and horny. especially with the foreshadowing of her getting all silly with one of his friends in an early episode (jumping on him half naked in the kitchen)

I am such a fan of this show, really enjoying it. I could care less about the mafioso bullshit, i love the multi family drama that goes with it, and hope they don't try to just keep it exciting for avg viewer with the so called action that goes along with the other crap.

I am much more intrigued by the family drama. I love how they portray the first wife and the hubby as an affair, that just fucking fascinates me. i just don't understand the choice of polygamy, and my choice of friends includes many swingers, so it isn't a judgemental view, just a serious critical observation that enjoys seeing an alternate negative possiblility on film.

oh and who thinks the mom really is trying to kill daddy???

Utah Saints, I guess, Mormons, polygamy, Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, SLC Punk. Nice place.

Isn't that hilarious? ;) What I like about the show is that, even though it's fiction, it gives me an idea of what an entirely different subculture is like.

My best friend in HS was mormon and her sister lived in Salt Lake City. Everyone one in their family talked about her like she was dead, I wonder if it was because she married a polygamist.

I didnt like this show at first but I watched a couple more on demand and I am totally getting obsessed. ITs just really interesting to watch something that really does go on in real life, but I would otherwise have no idea what its really like. Very cool

You know what drives me crazy? I don't understand how any of them (members of the 3 families) can possibly believe that NO ONE will find out the houses have one giant connected backyard! I mean, seriously now ...
