Troubled people enjoy drugs more?

There are those people who do drugs purely for the experiences they provide. No escapism, no muting of inner pain, no avoidance of issues they can't/don't want to deal with.. Just a desire to feel better than "ok" or "normal". Chalk it up to personal ambition, in a weird way I guess..

I don't think troubled people enjoy drugs more than untroubled people.

We (the troubled ones) just use drugs for different reasons - to escape our problems.

It depends. Me and some friends were on mdma last friday and we had a discussion about drugs. Some people use drugs as an escape, and others use them to have fun. If your using drugs as an escape then you have a problem

What about me?

I was adopted and never met my real parents. I just found out that my birth father was an asshole and left my mother, and her boyfriend after that died. My adoptive dad was killed when I was young. I don't see the majority of my family today.

Yet I'm not what most would call a 'drug user'. Sure, I'll do them occassionally, but compared to the people on this site, I'm like a nun.

This is not just your observation, it is documented scientific fact. Drug use/abuse and mental illness are frequently comorbid (and family and life issues can either cause or be caused by mental illness). I recommend checking out this brief paper (only a page and a half) with good charts: Comorbid Drug Abuse and Mental Illness (if you have connection errors, google "drug use mental illness" without the quote and it will come up towards the bottom of the first page of results, then use the "quick view" link)

And I wouldn't say that troubled people enjoy drugs more, I'd say they employ drugs more. :)

yes i do. my friend who has a GREAT family life barley smokes weed every once ina while.
but for me my parents fought until my dad passed away in 2005. now im a heroin addict

I definitely think theres a higher chance of someone becoming addicted if they've had a troubled past. Most of the alcoholics I know are alcoholics because they cant deal with problems in their lives. Same with most of the opiate/heroin addicts I know. Its a bit different with speed, I know people that have had near perfect lives that got hooked on speed/E pills though most of the speed junkies I knew had problems.

Ive been to rehab three times and 9 out of 10 people that were in there had serious family or just plain life issues. I dont know if you could say they enjoy drugs more than the average person any more than you could say they hate drugs more than the average person.
