Flickering
Bluelighter
So I recently found out that drug use runs in the family. I knew both my parents had dabbled in weed as teenagers, but I was surprised to discover, through an estranged friend of theirs, that they still smoke it frequently. In fact, as she put it, "There wasn't a day me or your mum picked you up from school that we weren't stoned." And to think of all the effort I've gone to hiding my own hallucinogenic use from them.
I knew my mum had once taken magic mushrooms. The way she told the story, she'd taken them by mistake because her friends hadn't told her they were psychedelic; following this my dad (before they were married) turned up, got angry to find her high, and drove her to her parents' house where she had to deal with them. I was always skeptical, because she has a rebellious streak and besides, I've eaten mushrooms, and they're not the sort of thing you gobble down because you like the taste. Well, turns out she did indeed take them on purpose, and she'd gone to her parents' house because the effects weren't kicking in. (Once there, of course, they did.) What really surprised me, though, was that my dad was also on shrooms at that party. He just didn't strike me as the type.
"He just didn't strike me as the type," I told my friend.
Then she laughed and told me they'd also snorted coke at their 40th birthday party - and that wasn't the only time. They'd also been into speed when they were younger.
No fucking way. The player got played?
My sister always insisted she'd seen them smoking, but my mum's parents both died of lung cancer, so I had a hard time believing her. Thick of me not to see the alternative, really.
Anyway. My mum's birthday is in a couple of weeks. I've bought her a san pedro cactus cutting, and another two for myself. Probably one of the more shocking presents ever. It does worry me slightly that she so proudly and confidently declared at my 21st that "neither of my kids takes drugs."
To guage how well she's likely to take it, I've given her The Doors of Perception and asked her to read it by the end of the week because I need to return it to the library, and have a chat to see what she thinks of mescaline. Hope this goes well. A family that trips together stays together, I figure. And anyway, I'm sick of the secrets I know we've all kept from each other for years.
Who else has family tripping tales?
