Tripping in total darkness

I find it a bit difficult sometimes to trip in darkness. I dont wanna sound like a big baby, but because I'm getting no external stimuli, my brain goes go to work on making its own fun, and because I'm such a drama queen/pessimist I always seem conjurer up frightening or overwhelming thoughts that sometimes shoot me into 'the fear' zone.

Just sayin...

Nah, this is possibly not due to you being a pessimist. The intensity of the experience goes up a notch or two quickly after cutting off external stimuli. This can induce anxiety or the impression of being overwhelmed in usually cheerful individuals too.

Sometimes I feel something uneasy or outright dark lurking beneath the surface too. This usually tempts me to pursue what's bothering me in silence and darkness as far as I dare. I think if you do psychedelics to learn a thing or two about yourself, than this is the precise moment where the magic is happening. The compound draws the thing out, and you have to decide if you want to take a look at it. Unless You're on a high dose you should be coherent enough to turn the light back on and chase the remaining shadows away. At high doses you have no choice anyway, the lesson will be tought, wether you want to hear it or not.

I can understand this perspective if the darkness is created through closed eyes, without external stimulation to distract focus, the intensity is boundless and on DMT it's just remarkable.. although, opening your eyes to sunlight, tree's and the earth is an almighty sight.

thats my point malakaix,to remove all external stimuli:) .DMT does have a majical way of rearranging your surroundings in a split second but i always see my surroundings, maybe not dismantled by machine elves but i prefer inner space to my living room anyday of the week.;)

i cant speak for outside DMT doseing though,i have yet to try it but i may have to take your advice and try it soon.nature is amazing.

the old school 50s-70s psychedelic psychotherapy model involves the patient wearing eyeshades while listening to music. Bought some ($5) and tried this at home a while back, out of this world awesome. Whole landscapes & vistas, visible music flowing through everything etc. Very effective.

or the penicle which is the old isolation tank tec %). there are untold wealths of knowledge within us just waiting to be sought out but some are too afraid to look inside it seems.

yeah but you know exactly how scary that shit looks from the distance glance that most people give it!

no excuses though.

yes, darkness lurks within us all and some people only want to see rainbows and butterflies lol.some try to avoid the darkness but you cant avoid it forever,it will surface sooner or later so its good to face it head on and learn to expect it when it does surface.i've seen too many ppl say they'll never trip again because they had a "bad" trip.i've never had one of those.....even the worst trips proved to be invaluable learning experiences.its the ying&yang, take the good with the bad cause without either, the other would not exist.

Yeah, it's also pretty cool when the lighting is really low so you can kind of see the things around you, and then your mind plays and warps them in all sorts of different ways.

definitely lol.. i read about it in that stan grof book, LSD Psychotherapy, that psychiatrists treating patients with acid had them wear sleep masks. i got a one (also $5) and now i wouldnt trip without it.

i think this is an important thread and i want to encourage everyone to close their eyes and face the darkness.. :|

the eyeshades will definitely be the way to go%), i've always wanted to trip in total darkness but eliminating all the external light has been impossible. Even if it's night, some light will pour thru curtains, below doors etc. You should find a way to block them completely before tripping.

No matter what substance or how hard i am tripping, i never seem to get as intense or vivid visuals as some others (not that it would be the only goal of the experience). Shutting off lights really brings them out for me and also deepens the trip alot. It can and probably will get scary, but taking psychedelics without total surrendering into their power, and trying to take in only the easy and pleasant parts is a recipe for some bad time. Preparing for the experince is essential, if your not ready to "close off the ligths", you're not ready for the trip. Made that mistake many times.

The traditional way to take mushrooms and ayahuasca among the native tribes was in the night time Myself i have never been able to wait till the dark to take aya, fasting through the day time is hard enough, and i don't like trippin on it just waiting it to end so i could eat something. Of course i eat some simple approved foods the day before but it gets uncomfortable enough still. It's another question how necessary that fasting really is...

Anyways, as some others said DXM is made for darkness. If it was daytime and i was tripping in my apartment, i would go to the bathroom, lights shut, and after closing the door behind me, i would be sucked into a totally different dimension. Although that was totally inappropriate place for the trip, thinking the situatin made it feel really bizarre listening the weird sounds coming from the waterpipes, drains and such. plus the faint sounds the neigbours made melting into them. 8(

Also onthe topic concerning ways to deepen the trip. I remember reading this thread made by some guy who used nitrous oxide for decades or something and developed some machinery with flashing lights and such which he used aiding the trip where he wanted. Sadly he developed some serious side effects from the excessive nitrous use. Here's the link if you haven't read it. It's good read anyways.

@THClaire
Have you ever tried salvia in the darkness??? for some reason when i've tripped acid in darkness I can only stand it for so long before i run out into the sunshine but with Salvia it's perfect! You are already going into your own world and when theres no lights around you it gets even crazier
pretty much the only way i can handle salvia is in the dark:D

would being in the dark conjure a dark trip?

not at all. your inner being summons the light within to compensate, your True Self arises and you see visuals that are purely of mental/spiritual origin. thats how you get to see and know what you really are... that's where its at... thats what psychedelics are really for!

sometimes there can be a layer of fear of knowing what you really are, but dont worry, that's usually very superficial, a childish leftover... you will quickly get past that and discover the core of common awareness, divine consciousness and infinite love within us all... we are all really the same One! <3 :|

i've tripped underground in old mines and natural caves, thats total darkness like iso tank
pretty amazing

I discovered my soul tripping in total darkness with my gf on 7g's of lemon tek'd mushies.

That's the single most memorable, life changing trip I've ever had; also the only trip I've ever done in total darkness.

In Food of the Gods Mckenna says tripping in darkness is the best way to really perceive the psychedelic world. Not just darkness though, but a silent area with nothing that can interrupt you either.

The first time I did shrooms alone I wanted to trip in total darkness, but got scared and just curled up in my bed and listened to music instead. Next time though!
