Heroin tried smoking h.........what am I doing wrong?

I got some dark brown powder gear that clearly is not tar, but because I was testing it out(boy isnt around here very often), I got some tin foil and a candle. Ive never smoked before, only IV'd, so I dont really know what Im doing save from what Ive read here. Ive heard it takes some practice to get it to run down the foil.anyway, I put about an inch of powder gear on the tin foil and held it above the candle. I saw a good deal of white smoke but it frazzled and I got no run. Damn...wasted dope....should have inhaled the white smoke. Anyway I think I got too close with the flame and Im using some pretty shitty tin foil. There was just a beetle left behind and a pungent, slightly sweet aroma. Could it just be #4? Its pretty water soluble. Anyway, any help would be appreciated!
 
Never smoked powder, only tar. I assume it would be extremely difficult. You need to suck up the smoke with a straw. Quality foil helps, not heavy duty, but not the really thin generic kind. Reynolds is best.
