Has anyone here been on trazodone as an antidepressant? If so, does it take weeks to start working like regular SSRIs or does it work straight away? When I take it to sleep at night, my mood is exceptionally good the next day so I'm wondering what the pharmacology behind that is.

Unlike ssri's TCA's such as trazadone generally don't require a long period of time until the user begins to gain clinical effects. Trazadone has some proven efficacy to treat some forms of depression, but strong efficacy as a sleep aid.

The pharmacology behind it is simple, trazadone is an antihistamine, and as with many other antihistamines it allows you to rest well at night, and wake up refreshed. A good nights sleep can alleviate many symptoms of depression and anxiety. Most people with sleeping disorders have co-existing conditions, predominantly the same ones trazadone treats.

trazodone is not a tricyclic antidepressant, it has a quite unique mode of action, and it has no antihistaminc properties. its effects are mainly mediated via 5HT2A-antagonism, 5HT1A-agonism and serotonin reuptake inhibition.

Yes you can get serotonin syndrome from any Antidepressant. As I take tramadol everyday(the days it lasts) I had a few bouts with serotonin syndrome. Trazodone helps when kicking from tramadol as it helps with the Antidepressant discontinuation associated with Ultram.

Ambien would be my second drug of choice if I had access to it because of the hallucinations and how euphoric it is to me. It can leave you hung over and trazodone induces much more natural sleep since I wake up better. Trazodone really helps while im kicking

Zolpidem personally does nothing for me..Only some slight visual effects that are quite uninteresting when I take 10 pills..I took 30 pills once and I became psychotic (for me that means a blackout, my knees were injured and my cdplayer damaged)

I think trazadone is great stuff for getting to sleep and helps my anxiety but it's sad it works so shortly..

Ambien for me is amazing I get nice visual effects and once I turned on my PS3 listened to a CD turned on the visual player and the color distortions were amazing.

i have read of trazodone being prescribed as an antidepressant and to my understanding that was its original purpose?

i've tampered with it several times mostly with a reckless approach. once while intoxicated. had to pee so bad i wouldve gone in the bed and I legit could not even crawl thats how bad this stuff hit me. had to sit down to piss and could hardly even do that.

another time i took it along with a 2mg xanax while intoxicated, note i am also prescribed paroxetine 30mg/d

was a recipe for disaster. stupid uneducated teenage days. still here tho! never had any antidepressant qualities for me when taken correctly.

You are correct trazodone is an antidepressant. Many antidepressants are prescribed for sleep even in patients that are not depressed. Once the brain gets used to the drug sedation goes away and another one might be prescribed.

Trazodone is garbage.! Made me feel horrible. Also caused my nose to be so clogged up that i could not breath properly to fall asleep. That was at the lowest dose too.

It's a tetracyclic...which often gets dumped in the tryclics category

This stuff fucked me up hardcore. I can't believe they just throw it at you in rehab. Really nasty drug if you ask me though I have met people that swear by it.

I agree, they stopped dispensing it a lot here, even just for sleep and replaced it with Atarax (hydroxyzine), the 50mg red balls will knock out most people who aren't used to antihistamines, they also use Phenergan (promethazine) a bunch in rehab. Both are much superior for just sleeping. Hydroxyzine is one miracle molecule if you ask me, it is SO useful :

urticaria, allergies, insomnia, anxiolysis, opiate potentiator (a real one, not a synergetic), helps with taking less benzos if one is an anxiety ridden mess and needs benzos everyday. I'm scripted 10mg valium bid and xanax .5mg prn (for panic attacks), and I can take just one valium and 50-100mg of hydroxyzine for sleep and I don't wake up a mess like with say people using diph (in overpriced pills like unisom who don't realize they could buy benadryl or generic benadryl for the same (shitty) effect).

Trazadone is a anti-depressant of the serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor (effects on serotonin relatively weak), anti-anxiety, and anti- psychotic as well as a sleep aid. It can also induce hunger, at times uncontrollable.

For some reason, rehabs love to perscribe it.

yes, it has four rings, but that doesn't mean that it belongs to the same family as the so-called tetracyclical antidepressants. the latter are structurally derived from the tricyclical ADs by closing a fourth ring, while the structure of trazodone is quite unique among ADs; it forms its own small category with some close relatives called serotonin antagonists and reuptake inhibitors (SARIs).
