hey guys,

I'm planning a trip to central and south america mid way through next year (will be leaving in July). I am planning on going for 5+ months, and will hopefully have around $10,000 spending money (with a bit of luck a bit more).

I was wondering for those who have been, where would you recommend? Also, is between $40-$50 a day easy to live off and have a good time in most countries? I may be budgetting a bit much, but in my experience of travel you rarely stick to a tight budget. This won't be including airfares between countries, but I will have the flight to Los Angeles covered.

Also, can anyone recommend some free online resources, or dvds etc. that I can get for learning Spanish?

So far countries on my to do list will be - The US (got people I know there - will only be there around 3-4 weeks).
Mexico.
Costa Rica.
Columbia
Peru
Brazil

possible other countries if I have money and time are Guatamala, Panama, Equadore, & Bolivia.

Is july through to september a good time to travel to colombia, peru and brazil? I was going to do central america during this time due to its proximity to the US, but have found out this will coincide with hurricane season8o. so I might just fly down to colombia and start with South America. Is starting with colombia a good idea, considering its reputation as being dangerous?

Any other recommendations or advice? or stories from your own travels to central and south america?

much appreciated

I have no useful information regarding your questions but here's a hot tip regarding travel insurance; don't get it through a travel agent! It'll be more expensive as they earn commission on each policy they sell.
You'll get the same policy for less money by going directly through the insurer. I think they are obliged to refer you to an agent but if you say you wanna just buy through them they'll happily let you :)

COCAINE!!!!!! its a hell of a drug....

haha thats only advice i can think of during this current state of mind.

nice and pure and cheap there. do some if ur into it. cuz its def not worth the $$$ price tag here in aussie land

I'd suggest travel insurance mate - probably the most important thing you can have, especially when travelling through South America. There's a good site that tells you a lot about different options and companies if you're interested - [snipped by request] - hope that helps, safe travels! %)

Latin America Trip

There are a lot of questions there
First of all I think your budget is fine if that is $US

For South America there are variations but the rainy season is generarlly Dec-April so July is a good time to go to places like Peru and Ecuador.
In Colombia though the rainy season is reversed and the worst rains are in November.

Where you go depends a lot on what you want to do.
Beaches? then go to Mexico, Costa Rica and Brazil
Hiking is great in Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador
Visit the Amazon?

Do you want modern (Colombia) or traditional? (Peru)

A good mate of mine has spent that sort of time in South America several times and he is always trying to get me to go to Columbia. Apparently the people are really friendly and the trekking is amazing. If you're going for that anyway.

I queried the whole drug lord perception of the place and he said that while there is plenty of coke around it is the same as everywhere else.

Have a great time
