Opioids Tramodol/ultram question

I took 150mg of tramodol at 4PM yesterday. I felt nothing until 11PM and by 5AM, I had reached the high. Why does it take so long for it to take effect? The high is as intense as the first time that I took it but I didn't get the high until the following morning.
