When I was an active opi addict, Tramadol became my bestest friend on several occasions. I am speaking of when I was dopesick and desperate to feel better, and they would become the only thing available. They were never even close to becoming a DOC for me, but taking 50 mgs. would immediately alleviate any dopesickness I was experiencing. I can't say I ever caught much of a buzz from them, but they definitely had their place as a useful tool in the life of an opiate addict.
I have also always about harm reduction and did a lot of research before I ever ingested one. What I read gave me a healthy respect for them, and I would only take 50 mgs. at a time, spaced 4-8 hours apart. They seem to last a long time, which is one benefit they have over oxy and hydro. Also, when they would begin to wear off, I'd become nicely sleepy, unlike the perpetual energy I'd get from regular opiates. I have come to believe that I probably have a very high seizure threshold, but those are nothing to mess around with, so I always erred on the side of caution.
Just my own personal experience. YMMV.
