I experienced exactly the same thing. It didn't matter if I dropped 50mg (or w/e) or all of it, I'd still go into bad withdrawals. Because of that I decided cold turkey was the best way to go about it for me. Yes, the c/t was a little worse, but not at all what I expected it would be.
A thought; would you have relapsed if you had been doing cold turkey and had made it 4 days like you had? Tapering lead me to relapse because I knew it would take me months to get to zero, when I did cold turkey I knew that it would be a one time drop which was a strong motivation to stick it out.
