Opioids Tramadol and sleep

It would follow that a partial opioid with SSRI stimulant properties is probably going to have an adverse effect on your sleep whilst its in your system. How much time are you leaving between dosing and going to sleep? Tramadol has a half life of up to 7 hours, so this may be causing your sleep problems.

Tramadol affects my sleep more than any other drug...if I take it too late in the day (any later than 4pm or so) I will likely not sleep until 7 or 8 am...

Take your last dose at least 5 hours before you sleep if you can, or at least longer than 2 hours before...You're never likely to get any decent sleep if you take tramadol 2 hours before hitting the hay.

Just a side note that people on SSRI antidepressants (and thus have gotten used to having them in their system at a stable level) will experience less sleep disturbance. Though taking tramadol while on an antidepressant probably isn't the wisest idea.
 
Tramadol has definitely kept me up at night...I have a hard time sleeping on it. If I'm doing tramadol, I prefer doing it during the day as I get significantly more speedy effects than a typical opiate nod (obviously because of the SNRI properties).
 
Absolutely. The corollary is, for the day or two after even just therapeutic doses of Tramadol (c. 150mg), I experience significant lethargy.
 
I take up to 400mg and have trouble sleeping. Would it be a bad idea to take amitriptyline to help sleep when i run outta Benzos?
 
It might be worth lowering your tramadol doses for a start. Anything from 400mg and above is seizure territory. Amitriptyline would almost certainly be safer than mixing tramadol and benzos for sleeping though. Amitriptyline isn't an SSRI so it should have no unwanted interactions with tramadol in that department.
 
Well it is an SNRI I suppose, so there's some serotonin action to look out for. It inhibits norepinephrine re-uptake as well.
 
so pretty much the same as tramadol does? I've always been a little hesitant to take it for sleep when I've had tramadol, last thing i want is a seizure or SS. Then again i never take More than 50mg of ami to sleep which isn't much so Maybe its antidepressant effects aren't active in that range. Right? Or way off?
 
Nah I think you're right to be cautious. I underestimated amitriptyline's similarity in side-effects to those of SSRI's...
 
It's strange because i cant find a definite answer anywhere as to whether it's ok to take amitriptyline to sleep after a day on tramadol. Until then, I'll play safe.
 
^As far as I know, tramadol and amitriptyline are sometimes prescribed concurrently by doctors, but I have also heard of people getting seizures from the combo - I would probably play it safe. When in doubt with tramadol, do not combine.


Tramadol definitely had an adverse effect on sleep for me. When prescribed it, I got used to taking the last tramadol no later than 6-7 hours before I intended to be able to sleep.
 
Tramadol and amitriptyline are best to avoid using together as it creates the potential for seizures and serotonin syndrome. That's the main issue with tramadol is that is doesn't mix safely with a whole lot of things.

Also to clarify Tramadol is closer to a SNRI than a SSRI in that mode of action.
 
Althought tramadol gives me energy, I can fall asleep very well. I usually wake up few times during night, but overall I sleep more hours than usually. So, tramadol affects my sleeping cycle but I really can't say I can't sleep well while on it.
