A major alert has been issued after the seizure of 150 bottles of counterfeit vodka laced with chemicals that can put people in a coma.

Teams of trading standards officers worked late into the night yesterday to search 172 shops, off licences, pubs and clubs across Salford after the discovery of the highly-toxic booze.

The counterfeit products were found at stores in Langworthy and Broughton.

Council officials said the seized bottles – falsely branded as Smirnoff Red Label and an unknown brand, Drop Vodka – are potentially lethal and contain a chemical which can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness – and even induce a coma.

"Chemical which can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness – and even induce a coma."
So alcohol doesn't already cause this?

I wonder how comparitively dangerous isopropyl alcohol is. Also, why would a counterfeiter not just fill the bottles with cheap vodka? There's some fantistically cheap vodka out there, and not all of it is shit!

I read where the shops were raided by police. Is it really necessary for the police to raid anywhere for anything? I mean, these places were fucking liquor stores. They have an unlocked front door during business hours. Its not like they were investigating an actual trap house or anything. Liquor stores seem, for the most part, like fairly relaxed places. I'm only 19 though. I haven't been in one but just from being in the parking lots of them for time to time, waiting on friends to get some.

This is why Vodka should always be purchased in cans

A Can of vodka?! thats new to me...

& Why does it not surprise me this happened in manchester?

They have cans of many types of liquor here, I've personally seen gin, vodka and whiskey singles for about $6 each (not bad compared to the price of a bottle). We also have premixed rum+coke which is delicious and perfect every time, mmmmm.

It happened in Manchester a few months ago aswell, im sure it happens quite often one of my local "corner" shops got raided and a load of his vodka was found to be fake.

Sometimes I do wonder though some of the vodka just tastes plain wierd, that one round the corner form me though jsut used to pull the vodka from under the counter, £8 for a litre of "smirnoff vodka".

Quite easy way to make money unless you were told to look out for fake vodka you would never have a clue, you think its regulated but unless you shop at the big stores you dont really know.

Your breath would smell pretty amazing after drinking a load of this. Like a severe, untreated diabetic. No, much worse.
(metabolises to acetone, which then escapes in large quantities in exhaled air)

A wide variety of alcoholic beverages contain isopropyl and other alcohols in non-negligible quantities anyway. Even 1,4-butanediol, also non-negligible.
All of these alcohols determine the subtle differences in subjective effects of different alcohols.
