Toxic effects of Mn Impurity in Methcathinone

Do not try to make a sucrose slurry using KMnO4......as you will likely be engulfed in a cloud of purple smoke. In respect to potassium nitrate and sugar...it is best heated outdoors on a barbecue (it will not explode, but when not carefully controlled, it may erupt in a slow and unstoppable deflag). KMnO4 is better suited as a low-order explosive booster charge rather than a propellant (plus it is too expensive to be used as a one). Yet even for low-order charges, there are other oxidizers that I would be more comfortable with, particularly when aluminum powder is involved.

The motors can be made rather simply using the basic KN03-Sugar slurry. I used to make back when the 'internet' was prodigy or AOL, and only had one unintended detonation from these motors. Its not really the motor that is of interest, it is what that motor 'delivers'. But in the post 9/11 environmental, I would advise against such experimentation, particularly as an adult. When you're 14, its easier to explain. When a 30 year old is found with rocket motors and amateur pyrotechnics, you may have been better off having made a batch of MCAT.......

Anyway, in the referenced thread, there is no reference to purifying the H2O2. Unless their drug stores are much cooler than mine, H2O2 is sold as a three percent solution, not 30%. Since getting to thirty percent is time consuming, I'm guessing that the genius' who tried that were using 3%, and they're probably right, it didn't work.

So why isn't there a published method for the H202 synthesis? Sounds like it would be pretty useful to the subset of people who are going to synthesize methcathinone but don't want manganism...

I would suspect that unless you've got stockpiles of more serious explosives, the police aren't going to be too interested in your model rocket motors. If I remember correctly, Bush made sure model rocketry was exempted from controls, even motors made by amateurs. I'd have to look up the refs again, but I believe it's explicitly legal to produce KNO3 and even ammonium nitrate rocket motors. I'm positive that it's legal to buy an ammonium nitrate based explosive for target shooting. Some guy in MN bought a whole lot of it and shot it from a distance, the whole town felt it. Had he not been a felon he probably would have been alright.

edit: tannerite is the name of the product. Ammonium Nitrate, 200 mesh Al and ammonium perchlorate, iirc.

It depends on the state. In some areas, there is zero tolerance for the unsanctioned discharge of firearms (let alone at a HE as 'benign' as tannerite). I do believe that it is in theory legal to construct rocket motors as a hobby, but the tolerance for these sorts of hobbies may vary significantly by area. Oh, and I just read about the incident to which you were referring - in my area possession of a .50 BMG rifle alone would result in a harsher sentence than a 3 year probation.

Unfortunately, we no longer live in an era where an individual can exercise the freedom to use ammonium nitrate as a secondary high-explosive or in the synthesis of low-quality methamphetamine.

As a mod on here, please, indeed continue to try being such, as your guidance was spot on. We didn't need two threads on methcathinone synthesis 'necromancied' in such a short period, with such lacking rationale.

When I was a kid I used to have great fun making rockets with potassium nitrate and sugar. They were never very good but I like to think they were an important part of igniting my enthusiasm for chemistry.
 
@Ebola, that's actually me you're quoting there, but never mind. I normally keep my mouth shut and let the mods do the modding, but this guy just resuscitated no less than four old synth/purification threads without adding anything of value.

Anyways, you boys discussing pyrotechnics is a whole lot more entertaining than the original topic.
