Hey everyone. Thought I would post this here, as it may be helpful for those out there that find themselves in trouble with benzo's.

recently, I'd gone on a 5 week binge (if you want to call it that), of taking roughly 3-4 mg of xanax, or occasionally clonazapam/day. however, my stash ran out due to my retarded decision to take up heroin again, and I found myself sunday night benzo'less, and unable to score anything but dope.

I went through a whole bundle in about eight hours throughout the night, (it wasn't great dope, but still...) and I still couldn't fall asleep because of my abrupt stop of benzo's. (the night before I had taken only .5 mg, the night before that, 3 mg). I thought that after only a little over a month of moderate use, heroin would be able to calm my nerves, but I still found myself bugging out, and got no sleep.

That morning, my symptoms got worse. I still couldn't cop because I could not leave my house till late, and benzo hours are clinic hours around here. While taking the subway to school my perception of sounds started to become painfully acute, if that makes sense. I felt as if I was hearing everyone talking on the train at once, and my heart was pounding. I had heard that drinking alchohol would temporarily ease w/d symptoms, so I had some beer before class, which did help a little, but I was still a complete mess.

When I got home, I discovered that my mom had a prescription for toperimate, which I had heard acted upon GABA receptors, and I did some research, some seemed conflicted over whether it was good to take or not for W/D. In the end, I decided it couldn't really do me any worse, so I took 50 mg.

Over the next hour I felt my symptoms decrease to the point where I actually felt happy, just from relief. I felt a little dopey, which I hear are some side effects of the medication, but all in all, it did a lot for me, and got me through the night until I could score again this morning.

Better yet, my doctor has agreed to put me on a clonazapam slow taper, so I can do this the right way, but I just wanted to post my experience with toperimate here for others because in my case, it really did help alleviate symptoms. I would also be interested in other peoples experiences with this drug for this use, and how it compares to other GABAergics like lyrica etc....
