Top 5 electronic producers

my next question is then what happens next, what will be the wider impact. for example do people think more djs will go down his route, or perhaps will the scene polarise further - with more djs and events setting out specifically as non-commerical?

The whole "commercial VS non commercial, underground VS mainstream" thing has been going on for years.

EDM is still pretty young. Started out in Detroit back in the 80's and then grew to other US cities and then to Europe. Back then it was a very underground thing but then with the whole youth/drug thing totally blew up and became alot more known.

some people do it for the love and some do it for the money/fame.

Alot of djs have gone down the commercial path. David Guetta most recently. He use to produce some very good house. Now he makes total cheese shit.

richie hawtin

Richard D. James
Dr. Alex Patterson
Jack Dangers
Pete Namlook
Richie Hawtin

Not easy...

I think you're the first person in this thread to mention Dr. Alex Patterson, which is surprising given that The Orb are awesome :) - my only regret is that I've never listened to their music whilst tripping (something that should really be a legal requirement in order to become a Bluelighter :) )

And yes - picking your top 5 sure aint easy!!!

Keep 'em coming, guys!!!

I'm not sure if I should replace Pete Namlook with Klaus Schulze, they're both so prolific.. Schulze, of course, being the elder producer who has accomplished so much should win out but Namlook started the fax label which has put out so much great music..

Genesis P. Orridge also comes to mind.. Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV.. transgender, transgenre, way out there.. If innovation comes to mind I think of they. True progressive futurist stuff, plus every time Genesis speaks I can't help but be rapt.

Also on the transgender trip.. Walter/Wendy Carlos.. Switched on Bach, classic music repurposed to analogue modular synthesizers.. Kind of backwards, but supremely well done, it must have been a nightmare to multitrack that.

I don't think I've seen Orbital or Future Sound of London mentioned here, either, on a more contemporary note.

Eh.. I can't leave out Front 242 on this post either, a huge impact on the early electro-industrial scene and very dear to my heart as being a kind of introduction to electronic music for me.. (I'm 32, Tyranny for You being one of my first electronic music albums)

I don't think I've seen Orbital or Future Sound of London mentioned here, either, on a more contemporary note.

Orbital have been included in a few people's lists already in this thread, and rightly so, because they're amazing!!!

As far as I can remember, the only person (so far) who has included FSOL in their list is Acid Eiffel.

Amazingly, I am still the only person to include New Order in their list!!! - there must be some more New Order fans on Bluelight!!!! - come on - show yourselves!!!

I'm also surprised at the lack of dubstep artists in people's lists - I know Burial has been mentioned, but I can't think of any others who have.

lol, i can sense the sarcasm. nah pretty sure they were around before the 80s and came from germany.

but they wernt really classified as Electronic Dance Music.

Kraftwerk were making 'EDM' before the term 'EDM' was invented, hence the fact that they weren't classified as 'EDM' :)

Check out 'Kraftwerk - Spacelab' (from 1978 )

And speaking of Kraftwerk:

goin worldwide-the legends in their own time-in order

*1*Juan Atkins
*2*Kraftwerk
*3*Giorgio Moroder
*4*Gerald Simpson
*5*Prodigy

That's a very fine list indeed!!! You've got me listening to a load of A Guy Called Gerald tracks on youtube right now!!!

Top 5 is hard to choose lol but if I have to they'd be (in no particular order):

Wolfgang Gartner

I just barely realized that he's the other alias of Joey Youngman. This guy is a machine, I've always liked his jackin house tracks as Joey Youngman. It's a pleasant surprise that he produces techy electrohouse as well. Pretty cool.

BUMP

Still awaiting lists from ChemicalSmiles, Thizzerfershizzer, and of course............KevinKostner (possibly a first appearance for The Vengaboys in this thread???)

Daft Punk.
The Prodigy.
Venetian Snares.
Black Sun Empire.
The Knife.

Also like Burial, edIT, Infected Mushroom (ignoring the past few albums), Counterstrike & Edgey.

Gonna blurt these out off of the top of my head, so they will be stuff I've been listening to in the last few years. Mainly breaks and electro

Aquasky (this guy is STILL making tracks!)
Tom Real and Rogue Element (as "Disco of Doom")
Far Too Loud
Deekline
Herve/The count of monte crystal

I would put AC slater or jack beats in there, but I've got to limit myself.

This is very difficult but...

1. Benny Benassi
2. Laurent Wolf
3. David Guetta
4. Daft Punk
5. Prodigy (I can't speak on newer shit but Fat of the Land was wicked)

I know, it's all very commercial.

French Fries
Tomb Crew
Crookers
Bassnectar
Rusko

edit:: (this is the top 5 off the top of my head, give me a week to give it more thought and I will update..... its VERY hard to do this, so many people I listen to.. i will pick out a top 5 shortly..shit maybe in a whole week this will take some time!!)
