I think Gargoyles is the most well-done cartoon Disney has ever made. In fact, I'm surprised they even made it at all and equally surprised no one has mentioned it in this thread.

As far as the movies go, my favorites as a kid were:

The Jungle Book
Dumbo
Robin Hood
The Sword In the Stone
Pinnochio

Honrable mentions go to the following in addition to a few that I was too old to really care when I saw them:

Sleeping Beauty
The Black Cauldron (I didn't know this was a Disney film)
Mulan
The Little Mermaid
Toy Story
Aladdin

damn straight! i felt like crying when my video player destroyed my tape of the movie (which in all reality was just a few episodes put together).

other than that:

The Lion King - was at the end of primary school when this came out and i knew every word of the entire movie!

The Sword in the Stone - i was a little dissapointed when i watched it again after many many a year, i think i built it up in my head a little too much, but still and awesome story!

Aladdin - cause genie was the bomb when i was younger! plus it was all so very romantic.

there are plenty more! Who Framed Roger Rabbit was awesome as well!!

There was a movie? Or just one of the many story arcs spanning multiple episodes? I recently downloaded the entire three seasons of the show...it's around if you know where to look. ;)

I didn't include this film in my list because I didn't think it was Disney? Regardless, this was deffinetly one of my favorites... actually, it was probably one of the first films that made my heart ache. I even read the book at the earliest age I could. :) I still remember it very fondly. I want to rent it now. :)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Don Bluth produced this cartoon, a Disney animator who worked on both Robin Hood and the Rescuers prior to becoming disenchanted and struck out on his own, taking with him Gary Goldman and a slew of other former Disney employees in tow. The Secret of NIMH would be their first project , based on a Robert C. O'Brien novel entitled Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

I also thought of a really sad one too... that part in The Rescuers when Penny is all alone and the song "Someone's Waiting for You" is playing..... SNIFFFFFFFF <3
 
Never thought of it as "gritty"... (like midnight cowboy gritty?) ;)
Its one of my favorite childhood cartoons and I really think you'll like it. <3

And yes, like Midnight Cowboy gritty. I think it was the fact that they're basically in a swamp, gross, lol. Somehow I lumped Rescuers with The Aristocats which I also thought to be 'gritty' and thus stayed away from. lol.
