Well I just recently started smoking Cannabis. A wonderful herb I must say. Last week I smoked it at night several times for about three or four days before taking a week long break. After a bit of time I started feeling a little sick. My nose started to run and I got incredibly tired.
I just thought 'oh I must be getting a cold'.
But these past two days I think, I've started coughing a lot. It's a weird sort of cough though. When I try taking in a good long deep breath I started coughing and I felt sort of a tingling, itching pain in my chest and throat.
So perhaps against my better judgment I said, 'well hey maybe a little reefer would help matters'
I smoked a bowl and then half a joint later that night. I'm thinking the joint was overkill because shortly after I was experiencing extreme shortness of breath, which panicked me for a moment...but I don't freak out easily. So I went outside for a little breather. It helped momentarily.
I was pretty stoned and enjoying myself but it was still painful trying to take in a deep breath and now my coughs are mucusy. I woke up just twenty minutes ago feeling sweaty and a little short of breath.
Now I know (to a degree) what asthma must feel like. It's not a good feeling.
In any case, I was wondering if maybe smoking had something to do with my sudden sickness.
I googled my symptoms but so many troubling results showed up to pick and I got really paranoid. I'm a hypochondriac.
I know smoke isn't good on the lung so I'm thinking maybe since I'm a beginner I've just been smoking a little too much maybe? It might just be a cold or something, but I've never EVER experienced shortness of breath or such painful inhales. Maybe bronchitis from what I've read...but I'm not sure.

also!
I'd like to go to the doctor but would that require for me to tell them I've been smoking...?
I don't want to get treated like shit or not even treated at all because the doctors assume I'm a bad person and such 'cause I smoked a little weed.

Do you smoke cigarettes? If these are your first experiences smoking, or you haven't smoked in a long time, it is to be expected that you would feel a shortness of breath. I would not be surprised if your lungs hurt and you coughed a lot. The shortness of breath coupled with the anxiety provoking effects of marijuana could easily make you over react.

I only smoke weed about 3 times a year now and I have sore lungs and shortness of breath after each smoke session.

I think you are perfectly fine. Give it a few days rest. Drink some cold water and you will be fine.

If you are really really worried I guess you could go to the doctor and tell them you have been smoking cigarettes but this seems highly unnecessary.

No, never smoked a cigarette in my life and I have no intentions of doing so. Nasty stuff.
But this only recently started happening after my third or fourth time I'd say.

I'm probably fine, but its painful...and if I get these symptoms all the time after smoking I don't think I'll be smoking weed very often.

The symptoms you talked about are symptoms that practically 100% of new smokers experiences. You really have three options: a) smoke through the pain. eventually after you smoke enough your lungs/body will get used to it. b) deal with the pain when you smoke. it is what i do. you eventually get used to it but will probably still experience some discomfort when smoking or c) stop smoking.

it is worth noting that there is no reason to hold the smoke in for more than 5 seconds. After 5 seconds there is no THC left to absorb and all you are doing is damaging your lungs with more tar etc.

Yeah I've known that. I don't hold it in for that long anyway. I've read that the longer you hold it in doesn't change anything. That really only applies to Salvia where you are SUPPOSED to hold it in for as long as you can.

I still have virgin lungs so if I do have the possibility of getting used to it then I'll keep smoking. The high is very relaxing and I've had some profound experiences. It also helps me get to sleep better and helps with my agonizing menstrual cramps.

When I get out of this damn university residence I think I might go into 'baked goods'
It's a lot healthier than inhaling smoke.

^ I was gonna suggest edibles if smoking isn't your thing but you already mentioned it. Nevermind newbierock. :(

Yeah the only problem with that is I live in a dorm residence right now...and even when i do go home for the Summer I can't exactly bake some nice little pot brownies in my parent's oven. haha
but if i can get a hold of some friends with connections then i'd love to try it.

Yeah, anxiety from cannabis can be pretty intense. Cooking doesn't take away the anxiety, although not inhaling smoke does pretty much stop any paranoia about difficulty breathing. Vaporizing has this virtue as well, though, and barely smells at all!

You're paranoid, smoke more. Its alright, you're just getting your cherry popped. Cough up the phlegm, don't let it stay there, and you'll be decent. The cold dry air of winter might have something to do with it, as its not good for the lungs. You probably won't even notice any problems in the warm humid air of summer.

Yep, just the season. Smoke more.

Weed has always made me slightly paranoid.
When I'm alone in my house, I'm fine, there's no paranoia at all.
But when I'm outside with friends I tend to get very paranoid. I don't know why, I just do.

Same here. I love just smoking by myself. I get no paranoia at all...but it seems I'm picking up on other's paranoia when I'm around friends...or their energies or something. It's wierd.
So now I favor toking by myself.
Plus I don't get the same profound, thoughts drifting out of this world experience when I'm with friends. When I'm alone though I have the most intense trip in the world just sitting back listening to music, watching tv, drawing or writing. It's so hard to describe.
I'm hella stoned right now.

I'd just like to point out that if your doc is going to give you shit about smoking, you should find a new doctor. :)

My doc asked me once in relation to a specific issue and then never brought it up again.

I agree. I smoke mostly by myself, but I smoke with friends a lot too.
When I smoke alone I just go inside and play games, listen to music, and eat but I don't watch TV much.
I'm also hella stoned right now, smoked Bubba Kush.

Yeah usually I play games...but most often I lay down in my bed, shut out the lights and listen to music.
And then I'm teleported into a whole 'nother dimension.
I've watched some TV and I must say I've had a lot of deep, profound revelations when I do. It's odd. lol
I understand everything a lot more and have a huge sense of empathy for characters. I think watching certain shows and movies while stoned was how it was meant to be.
I like smoking with friends but it's generally not the same type of high when I do.

Virgin lungs syndrome. I know the drill..

As a non-smoker, i experienced variying amounts of bronchitis (as you are describing) over the first two years that i smoked...

I'm an on and off smoker .
I smoke 2weeks then stop for 2 weeks .

And I get this usually when I start the 2 weeks .
But smoke more and it will go away I found
