Well, today is the day. No more excuses.

I'm about to start school in the fall, I've got a cool job, and a wonderful girlfriend.

I'm armed with seven xanax bars, Imodium, and some candy. I'm gonna sweat the day out and hopefully be able to take subs in the morning--which will be around 32 hours since the last time I put any opiates in my body.

Since I'll be in bed sick all day, please feel free to talk about your experiences getting through withdrawal and inducting bupe (subs).

Hey Anonman I just did a very short term sub detox for 4 days only.Today is day 6 no suboxone and day 10 no oxycodone. I only did a short term sub detox because I basically didn't want to switch one habit for another because the withdrawal from suboxone last alot longer than other opiates. Good luck to you.

You dont have to put yourself through misery and wait 30hrs before taking your first dose of suboxone. I've done it a few times and only waited 14hrs each time. Please dont put yourself through all that misery when you dont need to.

Hey Shawn,

Congrats on your detox! How did you do a sub detox that fast? How long were you taking the oxy's for and at what mg?

I plan on doing a twenty day sub detox. I figure that's quick enough to avoid stringing myself out on the subs but slow enough to avoid discomfort.

I've found that everyone is different with this. Some people go into percipitated withdrawl even when they wait 24 hours. I don't know what my body chemistry is and I don't want to chance it; so I'm gonna eat shit for a few hours just to be safe.

Congrats, I did a quick taper with subs off heroin and those xanax bars saved me in-between for 2 days ! ! :)

Hey anoman I have been taking opiates for about 10yrs legally prescribed to me.It started out with lortab then I switched over to oxycodone back in 2008.My back pain isnt that bad and I'm gonna choose a different way to deal with it besides taking medication. After prolonged use the medication dosnt work as good anyways and it totally changes your brain chemistry and your just taking it to feel normal and to avoid withdrawals.I am prescribed 240 mgs daily and have only been taking between 90 and 150 mgs of that amount. After last months drs appt I decided enough is enough this shit is making me depressed so over a 2 week period I did a very aggressive 90% taper from 150mgs daily down to just 15mgs a day believe me that was no walk in the park.My brain did get adjusted to just taking one 15mg oxycodone split in half two times daily though.I then got some suboxone and the rest is history. I cancelled yesterdays dr appt and today is day 6 no suboxone and 10 days since my last dose of 7.5 mgs of oxycodone.

Lol Thanks I'm at about 70% right now and getting better with each day that passes.I hit a wall though late in the afternoon with very little to no energy.I think the taper had to help me though. If you dont mind me asking what were you taking?

Its so nice though to not wake up feeling like death until I get that first dose of oxycodone in me though.Im getting a whole 8 hrs of sleep at night right now after a shot of Nyquil and 5 melatonin and 200mgs of 5htp.Im only taking the Nyquil for about another week it really does help me sleep.I have read other threads on people doing a real short term suboxone detox and they are back at 100% about 10 days to 2 weeks after last suboxone. So at 6 days no subs today im just about there yaay lol

That's exactly right we are all different that's why I don't give people time frames to go by when asking how long to wait. I tell them wait till you feel physically sick then you know your okay. I also tell them not to inject their first Suboxone or subutex because it almost guarantees you will go into precipitated withdrawal so if your gonna IV sub's at least take the first one you induct with under the tounge( the way it should be but I know some people prefer other ROAs so I gave this info).

I myself I only wait 4 hours after my last shot of heroin before taking my Suboxone but I have friends who go into precipitated withdrawal if they try to take it any time before the 30 hour mark.
Goes to show we are all way too different in the way we metabolise substances to come up with a specific time frame for how long a person should wait before inducting onto Suboxone/subutex.

And good on you for making the decision to quit this visous cycle:). Its not easy but worth it

Never did subs but I've kicked cold turkey and didnt sleep for 5 days so I'm glad you have help.
Watch it with the imodium .... ive heard because its opiate based it prolongs withdrawal , and my shrink agreed with me so there's probably some validity to that.

How are you doing today Anoman? Have you taken your dose of sub yet? Today is day 7 for me no suboxone and day 11 no oxycodone.

Hey everyone,

I didn't make it. I ended up taking a bunch of Xanax to wind down and then I turned my phone on (big mistake) and my dealer messaged me asking if I wanted to give him a ride somewhere and he could kick me down. So, I said "hell yeah."

So, now I'm back to where I was and I got to do the whole thing all the fuck over again. I still got some dope but I'm gonna let myself run out and try again! I know I don't have to give up.

fuck

What opiate are you using? If it's heroin or oxycodone (both have very short duration), I would honestly just go to bed as early as you can (benzos will help) and then sleep in as late as you can. When you get up you'll probably be feeling some minor WDs and I would dose the subs then.

I was never able to make it even 12 hours without using, the thought of being in withdrawal and waiting put me in such a state of anxiety I just couldn't do it. What I listed above is the only way I've been able to do it except for when I was in rehab and had no choice. And it was unbearable and there was a lot of needless suffering.

Just wanted to add that it doesn't matter if you switch opiates, you'll still be addicted. So switching from say oxycodone to buprenorphine doesn't mean you won't be dependent on the bupe, no matter if you take it a day or a year.

The reason people switch is because it's easier to taper a long acting opioid. And because buprenorphine is a partial agonist vs a full agonist like heroin, oxycodone, etc you'll feel more normal on it and the withdrawal will be much milder.

Don't beat yourself up about it. We just have to try til we get it right. Relapse may be a dirty word around here, but getting clean isn't easy. Just try again, and keep trying til you make it :)

Yeah, I relapsed a dozen times in my first year of recovery. It happens. Especially for heroin addicts. I think what will ultimately determine your success in sobriety is how you respond to those relapses.

Though I guess technically the OP didn't relapse, since they never got on the subs. But that first step is the hardest part and can definitely take several attempts.

Well, i gave my friend my phone and my wallet. She went out of town for a couple of days so I don't have access to anything. By the time she comes back I'll be on the subs! Can't give myself any other choice!

Good for you, dude. You can do this.
Just wait to dose the Subs until you're feeling pretty significant withdrawal symptoms. Most people don't need to wait the full 24 hours, but if you're not too uncomfortable of course it's safer to wait as long as you can. I would typically wait 12 hours and found that waiting longer made the Subs less likely to cover all my withdrawal symptoms, but that's just my experience.

Google the Thomas Recipe, it can also help in keeping you comfortable in between switching.
