Tobacco and Psychedelics

I'm not a smoker. On oral DMT I smoked so much I gave myself nicotine stains on my fingers with one trip. Synergy was great. I was also smoking cannabis to help with the nausea. No synergy there.

I've heard people say the same about mushroom experiences, fantastic synergy with tobacco.

Any other psychedelics where this occurs? Anybody know what tobacco's purpose is in shaman cultures? I hear all the time it is used as "medicine", but I never hear what its function is. But it has great synergy with DMT and apparently mushrooms.

Tobbacco goes well with many drugs, not just psychedelics. The nicotine is to blame.

I heard tobbacco is used by many tribes to lessen the effects of psychedelics so the consumer can return to baseline.

But I don't know, nicotine doesn't seem to decrease my high.

tobacco is definitely worse on mushrooms, its better on cannabis, it is probably terrible with most psychs

I am a non smoker as well but if I'm tripping on any psychedelic I absolutley fiend for ciggarettes! I've been known to smoke a half pack of smokes in a 6 hour trip. I have noticed that amongst my friends I am just about the only non smoker. I have wondered about the fact that I smoke so much on psychedelics and just rarely can finish a ciggarette while I'm sober. I also love to smoke while I'm drinking but nothing like when I'm tripping. I find the synergy between all psychedelics (that I've tried) and tobacco to be really excellent!

That's interesting that you say weed has no effect yet tobacco does. Many would argue they feel the complete opposite, weed enhancing and tobacco doing nothing.

When I take Dextromethorphin or LSD I have no desire for tobacco and I've been smoking at least one cigarette a day for months. However, I find weed so much better when combined with these.

I smoked for 25 years and please kids: stop smoking. Half the people who keep on smoking will die because of smoking related and smoking aggrevated causes. Smoking gives you the death risk of a very hard drug and none of the high, just a flavor and a constant need to keep lighting up.

No matter what kinda year you had, if you are a smoker and quit smoking, this year will be a good year for you.

If you really make up your mind its not a big deal, because 99% of smoking addiction is all in the mind. If you really don't want it anymore, you won't get cravings, just reminders of when you used to smoke. Nicotine can remind you of smoking, but it cannot make you WANT to smoke, what you WANT is what you choose for.

In simple termd nicotine is a maoi (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) meaning its slows the release of monoamine oxidase emzyme. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down neurotransmitters so you have a higher concentration of them. DMT is only active orally with an maoi, to preserve the dmt going through ur GI track so I think nicotine would also cause the dmt to have a longer and stronger effect through preventing dmt breakdown in the gi

I'm glad I quit smoking, but I used to love smoking tobacco while tripping on mushrooms etc.
Shamanistisc use wouldn't involve commercial cigarettes with all their nasty additives but rather 'mapacho,' straight from the plant. (doesn't mean it's safer, see link below)

I'm no expert on the topic so I'll just leave this link here, hoping it answers some of your questions:

Basically that's what Alan Carr says in his Easy Way books. I wholeheartedly agree :)

1. No it isn't.
2. That's not what MAOIs do. Rather, they bind to the enzyme, inhibiting its reaction with substrates.

some people i know who have done the ritual ayahuasca ceremonies said that often times they use tobacco alot, either as part of the brew, smoking during the trip, or a massive flood dose to purge their system (this one seems particularly awful).

the first time i tripped when i was young i realized how pointless smoking was and quit then and there for the next few years. eventually i picked it back up and slowly became more comfortable smoking while tripping. nowadays it can go either way--chain smoking two whole packs during a trip or hardly any at all, just depends on when and where i am doing it.

now smoking on ecstasy is a WHOLE other experience...:D

I'm an ex-smoker. But I do still use nicotine via electronic cigarettes. When I trip I always "think" I want some nicotine but then after a couple of puffs I lose interest.

I never mentioned weed in my post actually, just tobacco. I do find weed to be very synergistic with psychedelics though.

Oops I should a said other compounds present in tobacco act as aild maoi! Yea I'm new to this ...

In fact, tobacco itself is considered a psychedelic on the same tier as ayahuasca (DMT-source + MAOI + X) by South American shamans. Of course we talk about the chemically untreated type here. They also use it as a multi-purpose medicine there.

I personally only get negative effects from tobacco (dizzyness, instant melancholic mind state). I only use it in conjunction with weed, to make it burn more constantly. But I never had the privilege to try natural bio-tobacco.

Don't cigarettes sober you up? Thats what they're used for when drinking.

Ciggarettes sober you up from alcohol intoxication??? I've never heard that one before. I smoke whenever I drink (which is not very often - maybe once every 2 months) and I've never noticed that. In fact, now that I think about it every time I've gone to a bar I see tons if shit faced smokers.

I lost both my parents to tobacco related illness, so I too would like to warn against this pernicious & addictive poison.

Having said that, of course, the odd hit whilst tripping is very unlikely to cause harm, it's the constant, compulsive use that's harmful. Constant, harmful use is however a likely outcome after use of a compound as addictive as tobacco/nicotine. Just Say No! Lol

I try not to smoke too much while experiencing a psychedelic, but I do find the act very relaxing. I do not however enjoy the mental frustration of being addicted and needing a nicotine fix while tripping. It distracts from the potential of the trip, however is fairly insightful to explore my addictive tendencies.
