Tips & tipping general discussion

its one of those things we're taught as children, along with what races to hate, how to make a button stand, who to vote for and how to make a roux.
it's spelt "ryu ". Still, I would've thought you guys would be more into ken.

Interesting.

I'm a 20%-er. I always tip 20% or more when doing my hair etc but I think there's the odd time where people don't have money and I wouldn't take it personally if they didn't tip me adequately.

i tip the dude who cuts my hair 5 dollars if he does good and he charges 20.
tattoos i tip heavily if it's good.
food if they're pleasant 15% if they're rude they ain't gettin shit.

If you can't afford to tip at all you shouldn't eat up a table that a server could be making money on...I had a decent night tonight but it doesn't make up for the nights of all old people that I made five dollars an hour busting my ass for these picky demanding old codgers...I mean it isn't the fifties anymore...a dollar and a quarter doesn't even cover my busser.

I tip my barber at least five dollars...he's good and always has a funny story for me...my tattoo guy is in business for himself so I hook him up with a fair price for his work. I had him actually make a poster out of one of the demon tattoos he has and sent it to a friend...it was amazing.

I generally tip servers at least twenty percent unless twenty percent is a trivial amount...like on six bucks....he/she may get 110% in that situation.

My tip will always depend on how good the service was. If the service was bad I'd give two bucks. If it was ok I'd give 3 bucks, if the service was good 5 bucks. If the service was excellent, 10 bucks.

I was in the service industry for years so I have a hard time leaving a bad tip. I'm a 20% tipper most of the time. If service is really good I'll tip more. They really have to screw up to get less.

would you tip the same on a $12 as you would on a $120 check?

Some restaurants have the rule of at least paying 15% tip or 10% tip. Unless they have a rule, I stick to my usual tipping. I am probably being a tight with money but money is hard to earn these days you know lols. I hope I answered the question :D

So, if your bill was $120 and the service was good, you would leave a $5 tip?

Well, that is your prerogative of course, but if I were you I would certainly be wary of eating at the same place twice! Lol

lols! Yeah I am too much of a cheap ass that my bill rarely goes up to 120 bucks =D

Does Greyhound run from Canada to Louisiana? At the risk of derailing the thread in my own forum, PM me, beautiful.

I've been a waitress/bartender for over twenty years now, and it's seriously something that I love doing. The trick is to know what people want before they know themselves. I've always made a good living at it, mainly cause I don't let the little shit bug me. And I tip very well when I go out, sometimes up to half the bill. Good karma ya know....
I don't go out often though:)

policy on tipping V. I know your canadian and I didn't expect a tip.

I have worked in restaurants for my entire life. I have done everything from dishwashing to bartending, to executive chef, to serving...etc.

It is customary in the united states to give 20% of your total before taxes to your server. (they make like 4.25hr which is server minimum) I have seen it all, from people giving me a dollar for a thirty dollar meal (and stealing my 1.99 pen in the process) to people leaving me a hundred dollar tip for two drinks at a bar because I made them laugh.

I know it is a flawed system, and as a customer you shouldn't have to subsidize a restaurant owners employees pay, but unfortunately this is what we got...so tell me your policies!

I also like to hear stories from servers, and stories from customers.

For Content: I usually give more than 20% if three criteria are met. They are presentable and tidy, they get the order right and are prompt, they know the menu well and can make suggestions (I generally don't go to corporate restaurants, and a server that knows the menu as well as their chef's strengths can make sure you have an excellent meal)
