Thyroid problems and substance use (psychdelics and stimulants)?

Hello!

I have a question that im not sure where to ask.
A friend of mine (seriously, no swim here) is a very seldom user of various substances, perhaps once a month maximum, with substances varing between lsd, mdma, 4fa and 3mmc.
There are no background health issues or simultaneous medications. healthy female, late 20s, fit and smart.

however, she has had some trouble swallowing, and yadayadayada, was diagnosed with thyroid cysts (filled with blood apparenly) that are benign in nature, but do reappear and sometimes grow. again, nothing life threatening or anything.

i promised to ask: is there a correlation between substance abuse and these cysts?

the docs cant really say much (as most of the rcs arent that studied anyway, nor known), and my instinct is to say theres not much to worry.

but perhaps the more illuminated minds around can give me some comfort/ reason to worry?

4fa has fluoride in it, which can disrupt iodine's ability to form the complex relating to thyroid hormone. Fluoride tends to lead to hypothyroidism though.

The most common reason for thyroid cysts is lack of iodine in the diet, but this is rare in the developed world. Nonetheless, she may want to look into consuming iodine rich foods like sea weed. Iodized table salt, IMO, is not enough for someone who's really lacking.

Even though it's not cancerous, I would not call thyroid cysts filled with blood "benign". Cysts form around pathogenic factors to protect the body, whether those factors are endogenous or exogenous in nature. Her thyroid is trying to clear something that is hard to clear, so the backup plan is to form a case around it and let the immune system work on it over time. Eventually those blood filled cysts become filled with fibrous tissue, and the cysts become hard -- that's if they don't go away. If the cysts are around the thyroid then the offender is thyroid-related. This may not be reflected in blood work though if thyroid function is in the normal range.

I have not personally read thyroid-related literature in regards to LSD and MDMA, but the other two chemicals you mention are research chemicals whose long-term effects are not known.
