Thoughts and suggestions for forum improvement

Here's a suggestion. For starters when moderators close down a thread maybe they should give a reason.
Secondly why is it that this forum is so censored on certain topics? I wrote a thread about religion and how I don't believe in it and just wanted to get some input from people who are religious or who are not religious on the topic and I got shut down for no reason. I don't understand how people can talk about drugs shooting up the best way to get high on prescription drugs but we can discuss religion or the lack thereof.
Who decides what's appropriate to talk about and what's not. Is it just left up to the moderator? Whatever his personal opinion is if he doesn't like what he sees he just has the right to delete it? It seems to me that the moderator is a religious person and doesn’t want anybody slandering or talking bad about his religion. And because he does not sure these views he just deletes the thread and does not give anybody a chance to share their views or opinions.
I think that moderator should be bias that would be one thing that would really help blue light out.
Just because you don't believe in what someone else is writing or their opinion doesn't mean it's wrong or not worth talking about. A good moderator would let people express their opinions and views even if they do not share the same views. You could learn a lot for the snipershide forum on
 
bravo-6, I closed down your thread because it was inflammatory, simple as that. Reword it to be a little more respectful towards those of us who'd politely disagree with you, and you're welcome to try again.

We have a long standing rule here in P&S that everyone's worldview and beliefs get respected equally. When that rule is followed, the signal to noise ratio in this forum stays consistently high. I apologize for not having made this rule clear in writing -- the other mods and I are currently in the midst of overhauling the forum guidelines.

You're welcome to calmly and politely explain your beef with religion. Trust me, you're far from the only hardcore atheist in these parts. You may not HATE ON religion here. Dig?

We do (well, at least almost always).

Some topics have a 'rich' history of prior discussion than need be searched before being revisited. Some of these topics also have a history of people looking to antagonize those who believe differently from them. Religion is one such topic. What is more, most of our prior problems with this topic were created by 'anti-Xians' trying to bait Xians into heated argument.

So with these topics, please post in light of the results of a search and curtail all wanton vitriol.

Trust me: the moderators here are for the most part irreligious and a bit ambivalent about their spirituality.

I, for one, take exquisite care when moderating posts with which I disagree, to make sure that said post is indeed willfully inflammatory rather than seeming so just because I disagree. And yes, our decisions are always subject to open assessment by 'lay posters'. ;)

I think that there should be a sticky thread that pertains to good reads dealing with philosophy. Sort of like the cards at the library that help people find cool books. Maybe i should start the thread...

you know, here's a thought: separate Philosophy and Spirituality. I can't imagine two topics which could possibly be more at odds with each other. just when I think we're going to get into some serious philosophy, the spirituality nerds come along and start talking about their feelings.
 
I think that the two must tackle one another if they are to move toward adequacy.
And just as often, anti-religious people create and spur shite-posts.

i'm not anti-religious. I just feel that religion and philosophy often simply talk past each other. saying the the two must tackle one another is like saying that you've got to tackle global hunger before you make dinner.
 
I wasn't referring to you...I was noting a general trend...well, more characteristic of the forum in an earlier time (the current mods, with my exception are great, I think. :))

I disagree...the two frames cannot avoid engaging the same topics, so they really should answer to one another at some point, at least to refute one another.

Also, there are macro-cultural frames where the philosophy religion divide doesn't even make sense.

At some point, maybe, but all the time?

The problem is that it's the same thing over and over again.

Person A is discussing something or other

Person B: don't worry about that, see the whole world is a unified whole of existence and we have atoms that are recycled so (leap of reasoning >) that means that we will be reincarnated when we die.

Person C: I think God wants us to be happy so as long as your moral character is strong you will prevail and learn one a valuable lesson that God intended for you to learn.

Person A: ok so what's this got to do with *blah*?

Person B and C: What's it got to do with it?! It's everything, it's got everything to do with it!

Person A: Ok but couldn't I relate almost any topic to any other topic with that kind of reasoning? ... I meant in a less sporadically general sense, what's it got to do with it?

Person B: maybe you should try meditating.

Person C: you're going to hell bro.

Person A: well this was a great conversation.

This is a few people talking past one another, not the sort of dialogue I had in mind. And tired re-treads are tired re-treads regardless of content.
