Thoughts and suggestions for forum improvement

lets start posting science and technology articles to kick off discussions

i think that keeping this thread alive is the way to go

and keeping you, complexPHILOSOPHY, as a mod ;)

i often think about thread i could start, but i got a great difficulty to expresse my thought,
recently i was thinking about how it would go if we would use youtube
like they use in some blog
with just the little box, and you click play...
you dont go to the site
so, people could be seen ( or wtf you want to be seen..)

i dont have a camera (yet) most people dont, but eventualy most people will
but how will it go, there is advantage to not hear or see someone, specialy with all the visual prejudice we deal with..
but in a year or 2 im shure it will be common
face to face video discussion...

the Thought and Awareness Identity crisis...
..

I will start doing this; I think it's a great idea.

i think that any replies which contain biblical (or other religious reference material) references and nothing else should be forbidden. they add nothing to the debate.

i'm absolutely fine if somebody wants to quote the bible then take a moment to explain why they think the passage relates to what's being said or reinforces their point.

blindly pasting scripture does absolutely nothing whatsoever to progress the debate.

thoughts?

hell no! you can just disregard the poster if that is the case. you seem to be like me, i love a good quote and use them as responses often. a christian has the right to do the same thing.

now if they are overdoing it, and obviously that is all they are doing, they are trolling and will be dealt with as a troll.

i really loathe overmoderation. not to do it is my only suggestion for this forum. it is an unnecessary one though, seeing the current behavior of the mods :) i am not sure if it is bad or good that i never see you guys post!! :D

+1

And whats with the name change? "Philosophy & Spirituality" doesnt really describe the wide variety of posts being made here, especialy the more scientific ones.

Unless theres a new science board...that would be good...

Frankly I thought it was getting healthy with fewer "God exists" "No he doesnt!" threads, and I cant see that helping a thing.

I suggest a daily dose of LSD--in the 300 microgram range--followed by a glass of warm 2% organic milk from the Pacific Northwest.

It's been a while since I have graced the hallowed walls of this forum and I must admit I was a bit confused about the name change to "Spirituality and Philosophy" from the old "Thoughts and awareness"

I think the new topic is a bit more specific a topic which is great, but I also think the name turns its back on the scientific discussion that often went on here.

I think it would be great if there was a separate forum for "science" along side this one, the separation might be a good experiment to stop the multitude of God vs Science flame wars that used to (and still?) go on.

I would be glad to help moderate such a forum (although I think there are more worthy people here, has there been talk of such things? Would anyone be interested in have a pure science forum?

I’d like to see moderators participating in threads that at least loosely follow the decorum of debate, simply to keep them alive. It’s unfortunate that people use this forum to vent without defense and make captious, irrelevant statements simply to subvert others. Almost any good, thoughtful debate thread will be a series of at least paragraph-length posts. If reading through a debate and thinking in regards to the arguments already established scares people away from posting replies they can go to the Lounge. Creating more stickys for the topics that get a bunch of over-excited children frantically posting thoughtless answers, as already suggested, would make a good addition. I understand attempts at this have been made, but they require enforcement, such as merging them into the sticky thread in places where the sticky thread's last debate falls apart. However most of these types of threads should simply be sent to the lounge.

Even if the mods are not interested in the topic, keeping the topic alive might at least create an environment where posters believe they are expected to advance a debate and not simply opine their desultory or blatantly off-target thoughts (they can try starting a new thread for that). People will warm up to a more formal structure in this forum, even if they are merely reading and not participating. Threads whose questions or topics only elicit one-word or phrasal answers, which are hardly in the spirit of debate or the pursuit of knowledge, should be moved to the Lounge, regardless of the topic (after a certain amount of time and at the mod’s discretion).

I think the name of the forum is fine, I would suggest that moderators stick a nice juicy topic in to liven things up now and then. Debate is good, even heated debate, just as long as we all avoid the flame wars that plagued us all in this forum. To technoHarmony, remember that anything that relates to philosophy or effects it is discussable, a good book that someone should discuss is David Darling's Equations of Eternity, I'm not finished with it yet, but it has to do with how mathmatics effects the universe and our perception of it. It's very worthy of discussion, and a good read, and relates to mathmatics as the layman can understand. It generally doesn't venture off too much into abstract equation laden theorums. Check it out, food for thought!

This an "effect" book, the causality having already occured.
