Those who have the power to hurt but don't... have won

Because it bothers me when someone who dosn;t know what they are talking about thinks they do, and then attempts to talk down to me. I have a hard time letting things like that slide.:\

I don't like it when people patronize me either.

But that has nothing to do with them and more to do with me, if you catch my drift.

^Absolutely. It is actually the ego reacting , in the case of the poster above...but yeah i KNOW the feeling of wanting to have the last word especially when dealing with sanctimonious morons. BUT thank god i have outgrown that =D

There's a difference between being intelligent, being smart, and being ignorant.

Intelligence is intellectual capacity to learn and to solve problems. Anyone with high intelligence is okay in my book (barring the one exception noted at the end of this post). Being smart is a different story - smart is knowing a lot of facts. You can be smart without being intelligent. A lack of intelligence does get to me sometimes, but I've had my fair share of friends who were terrible students and self-proclaimed "idiots" who I got along with just fine. I don't care if you can't pass high school - I care if I can have a conversation with you.

As has been said before, it's less about brains, more about personality. I'm a textbook brainiac (pun intended :)), and I love my high-end philosophical and academic discussions, but I don't spend all day discussing quantum physics, nor do I want to - I love spending time with all sorts of people, regardless of their academic capacity. Besides, a lot of the brainiacs have abso-fuckin-lutely NO clue how to party!!! :)

What really gets me is ignorance and a lack of common sense. People who show that they know nothing of the world and especially those that have no desire to learn are the lowest of the low in my book. And right down there with them are all the people who flaunt themselves and shower everyone with arrogance, whether it's about their intelligence or anything else. I don't have time to listen about how great you are. I became a bit condescending as a defense mechanism after being made fun of in school my whole life, and I can safely say that's the one thing I hate most about myself.

The key word for me here is MATURITY. Maturity need not necessarily come with age, but with awareness and understanding, borne out of individual perception and cognitive experience. A truly intelligent individual is usually mature in mind AND emotion as well .....he develops this consciousness on the basis of his empirical experience and verification of facts and strives to break free from irrational thoughts, beliefs, prejudices, notions and emotions that would otherwise cause a less mature / immature / ignorant person to be cruel, inconsiderate, selfish, or just not aware .

kitty - Does a better personality bring an innovation into the world? Does it spur creativity and make great developments in human technology and production?

Or is there something linked between a good personality and someone open minded?

But maybe this thread and discussion is more about feelings, emotions, and the social contexts between people in regard with intelligence, rather than the evolution of ideas, information, and technology.

Very well said.

I believe personality is largely driven by intelligence and the possession of talents. Those who are intelligent/talented enough to gain power in one field or another may choose to use that ability for the best, or the worst, or they may choose to ignore it and remain ignorant about themselves and the world for the rest of eternity. It is those people that have the capacity to use their abilities wisely and for the greater good that make the best people, and the best friends. People who are well-adjusted, essentially, people that don't make everything into a power-trip, people who aren't defensive or shallow or just complete ignorant idiots.

Having any particular talent (and intelligence can almost be included as a talent) opens doors to gain a lot of power over people - look at famous actors, artists, musicians, politicians, and the like - it is the benevolent folks who would use their gifts for everyone that have truly made it as good people.

There are a lotta "smart" depressed people...I'd call them stupid, personally.
Holy shit, how did I miss this?

I think you're a really cool dude and we seem to get along well on here, and you normally seem to be quite intelligent, but that's an ignorant fucking thing to say bro.

kittyinthedark: great post.

Anyone can be intelligent (I don't mean that literally, just generally).

But it's only the truly WISE who know they still have much to learn. A humble attitude to one's natural gift of intelligence, coupled with benevolence, is one of the biggest personality turnons I can think of.

No one likes a snob or know it all, but sometimes a good offense is the best defense in a dog eat dog world.

Pragmatism and cynicism might not make me warm and fuzzy, but it sure seems to keep me from being knocked down and stripped naked on the street in the middle of winter.

At least so far....

Thanks for admitting your ignorance :)

Well I have known quite a few "smart" depressed people, and they just miss obvious simple pleasures/things in life and are ALWAYS THINKING TOO DEEPLY...stuff like that...I've been there, too, I suppose. I think it's pretty stupid. I don't really like hanging out with these people that much more than "actual" stupid people, in general, cause I can't take them always whining...I dunno...I suppose they're ok, but people who can't be happy are pretty dumb in my book, in a way. Maybe this is why I don't fit in with a lot of people, whatever. This is just a perspective. I don't mean to insult anyone. Like I said, in the end, I don't care much about "smart" or "stupid"...but I think being depressed is pretty stupid behavior (and yes, there is no "obvious" way out of it, sometimes, it seems, but that doesn't make the behavior smart).

I really don't have much respect for your opinions anymore man. It's a shame that one opinion you hold changed my view of you that quickly, but it just happened :\ This theory of yours reeks of "I'm 15 and I have the world figured out" syndrome. Hopefully as you get older you'll become less naive on the subject of depression.

If you have strong opinions that are as offensive(not to mention naive) as this one on many other subjects, then I'd guess you're onto something here.

sorry, but being depressed is pretty "dumb" although i realize my telling you so isn't helping you any *shrug*
I never said I was depressed. Just because I have some basic knowledge about the depression doesn't mean I am actually depressed...

I think you've mistaken my offense to your comments as implying that I am depressed. Following that assumption, you think I am pissed that you are calling me stupid(by calling depressed people stupid), and thus I feel I have to defend myself because I don't feel I am stupid. These assumptions couldn't be any more wrong.

What is actually going on: I have a lot of basic knowledge about depression, and I have interacted with those who have been depressed numerous times, usually extensively(extensive time spent with them). This does not necessarily mean I am or have ever been depressed.

I am taking offense to your comments because you are willfully illustrating your ignorance on a subject that you appear to know very little about, not because I feel like you are insulting me.

i suppose i'm going to apologize to some people somewhere down the line
I don't know about having to apologize to anyone, as you're proving your own ignorance on the subject moreso than doing anyone harm. Thank God you posted this in T&A and not TDS(in which case you would owe some apologies as you WOULD be doing a lot of harm).

The main reason I'm not shredding you up here is because this is T&A (how ironic this has come up in THIS very thread. Wow.), not somewhere that it has a great potential to hurt people, such as the dark side. Someday you'll realize the error in your little hypotheses about depression, and you'll say "Wow, I was so wrong".

crystal - Were you offended that I was asking kitty a question that you already answered?
