^ I've always said the same (in similar vein, Fair Trade cocaine from South America would be great). There are no obvious reasons not to do so other than upsetting the heroin producers. Given the power they have in Afghanistan I could quite believe they would be able to intimidate the poppy farmers into not going along with it though :\

In many areas, there are simply no doctors or modern pharmaceuticals available, so the brown, sticky opium is smoked and ingested by men and women, boys and girls - and even babies.

This was also standard in Victorian Britain. Either that or nasty, adulterated gin anyway. The opium would definitely be the safer option. Don't suppose there's much gin around in Afghanistan but as there are poppy fields as far as the eye can see in some areas it's quite understandable they'd make use of it. Not like they have many (any?) other options at the moment :\

apart from the occupying troops who can't touch the poppy fields it's the opium kingpins who already have the power in afghan innit

"The only good that might emerge from this fiasco is a long-overdue review of drug control policy."

About fecking time...

The tossers in charge now should announce an immediate review of the cathinone amendment to the misuse of drugs act and an investigation into the way it was forced through the house.

"Disgusting Bhevaior of Israel.: What your "article" does not tell you is that when Israeli Special Forces boarded 1 of the Turkish ships, they were confronted by a group carrying axes and PISTOLS. 7 Israeli soldiers have been shot, 2 critically. That little tidbit should make you think a little bit.

A bit about the "flotilla." Carrying 10 tonnes of AID, it represents less than 4 days worth of commodities, provided by Israel, every week. As if that was not wasteful enough, Israel offered to allow the ships to offload their AID in Ashdod, for inspection, and then offered to deliver it in addition to the 15,000 to 17,000 pounds of Israeli commodities going to Gaza weekly (plus 54,000 tonnes by foreign govts and NGOs). The "Flotilla" refused saying Israel is "disgusting,"

Egypt then offered, despite 1 Egyptian policeman having been murdered in the last fiasco, in 1/2010 when AID came to Port Sa'id, again on a "Flotilla." Again organisers refused, saying they would only accept directly landing in Gaza and not allowing either Israel OR Egypt to search the goods.

Israel attempted to intercept the ships earlier but they changed course because, in the words of the organisers, they wanted a daytime confrontation "for better photo ops."

This is poseur bullshi*, playing not only with the sovereignity of nations but with peoples' lives. That members of this group would try to use violence is not at all suprising given the fact that "Free Gaza" is a part of ISM/PSM (International/"Palestinian"Solidarity Movement). This group supports the use of "Suicide Bombings" and has been directly involved with the furtherance of terrorism.

If you want to draw down on IDF Commandos, you will end up losing. The shame is that 7 Israeli soldiers were stabbed with axes and shot with pistols in a stupid publicity stunt.

For the poster cursing an entire nation, you do not even know what happened and yet you saw fit to disparage an entire nation. Sad.

Oh for fuck sake I KNEW you'd come posting in here Rachamim.

Oh what so blockades and killing civilian aid workers isn't playing with lives, Rachamim.

In what has amounted to piracy in international waters, someone comes on my boat waving a gun at me I'm going to try and defend myself.

Israel boarded a ship in international waters, occupants were holding a white flag and the Israeli troops opened live munitions. Comprende?
Criticising that artcle is laughable, care to offer a better source? There were Aljazeera reporters on board the ship you know.

since the intensification of the siege in June 2007, "the formal economy in Gaza has collapsed". (More than 80 UN and aid agencies [.pdf])

"61% of people in the Gaza Strip are ... food insecure", of which "65% are children under 18 years". (UN FAO)

Since June 2007, "the number of Palestine refugees unable to access food and lacking the means to purchase even the most basic items, such as soap, school stationery and safe drinking water, has tripled". (UNRWA)

In February 2009, the level of anemia in babies (9-12 months) was as high as 65.5%" (UN FAO)

"water resources in the Gaza Strip are critically insufficient" (UN FAO)

"the blockade has been a major obstacle to repairing the damage done by Israeli air attacks and destruction. Nearly none of the 3,425 homes destroyed during Cast Lead have been reconstructed, displacing around 20,000 people. Only 17.5% of the value of the damages to educational facilities has been repaired ... [T]he infrastructure which remains unrepaired is often that which is most essential to the basic needs and well-being of the Gaza population." (UNDP)

So forgive people for trying to want to get some fucking aid there.

What gives the right to the IDF to board vessels under foreign flags in INTERNATIONAL WATER???????????

It's Israel, they do whatever the fuck they please. Well out of order what happened here.

I don't see how it's possible, even for the amount of lobbyists and connections in western media Israel have to be able to make this one sound anything other than what it is.

What is even worse, is that some of the activists are going to prosecuted... For resisting and assaulting the boarding of THEIR vessel in international waters.

I feel sad, really sad for anyone justifying what happened. I hope that there are voices in Israel that are condemning what happened. There might have been a time when I would try to have a unbiased view of that region of the world, but that time has gone away... Far away.
